TSA Question

I am flying out of ATL tomorrow (3/30) on Turkish Airlines. I am checked in for my flight (have a seat assignment and all that jazz) but cannot get a mobile boarding pass and must get it at the check-in counter (or a kiosk if it works), which is not unusual for international flights and not too big a deal under normal circumstances.

But because of concerns about TSA lines I would like to get to the airport extra early. Earlier than the counter is likely to open. I have no bags to check. All I need is a boarding pass.

My question is this: Is it enough to be checked in for a flight to pass TSA and get my boarding pass at the gate? I know I haven’t had to show a boarding pass in a while, but I have always had one and never worried about getting through. But will the TSA system red flag me for only being checked in and not having an actual boarding pass?

They have to scan your boarding pass at TSA.

Unless it’s a very recent development or something to do with the shutdown, TSA has not asked for my boarding pass in a long time.

Don't know about international flights, but I did not have to show my boarding pass to the TSA agent on my recent domestic flts.

Heck on one leg my phone screen locked up and I was like "oh dang, my bad" as I was putting the code in, and he said "no worries, I don't need that"

One thing I will say, you can opt out of the face scan. Just tell them when walking up, and before you hand them your DL. Cause once they scan it they have to do some work to reverse it. Slowing the line down some.

But I am assuming you had a boarding pass and that you cleared the system because of it.

I don’t expect a TSA agent to ask for a boarding pass unless their system alerts them that I don’t have one and it’s required. But will it? I may not have a boarding pass, but I do have a booking associated with my name that could possibly pass me through depending on what information their system has.

Yes, I had a boarding pass created from my online check in. Didn't think about it now being integrated into their system.

No, you do not need a boarding pass to go through TSA.

Yes, probably.

I would check the language to make sure they don't require you to check in at the counter since its an international flight. Also I've seen gate agents get very pissed at people asking for a new boarding pass without having a valid reason (seat upgrade, standby list, flight change, etc.). I think its mostly people who lost a paper pass in the airport which won't be your situation. Good luck.

Most times when I fly there are agents standing near where the lines going into security starts to check my boarding pass for TSA Precheck or other status. If you have a priority boarding pass of any kind I would get it before going through security.

Did you need the pass or what?

That's never happened to me on TK, in any airport, foreign or at IAH. I've always been able to print it ahead of time.

No checked bags on a flight that long may have triggered an increased level of scrutiny. It's not like you're going to Montreal for two days with a carryon. When you figure out what caused it, let us know.
