Eurail for getting around Europe

Has anyone ever used Eurail to get from place to place? I'm thinking of getting the 7 day pass and just winging it.
Here's the plan. We already booked 10 days in Ireland. This may be our last trip to Europe and the missus wants to see Paris and Switzerland. So the thought is to fly to Paris, get a Eurail pass and just go wherever we want for a week. The 7 day pass is only $292/pp. Just wondering if anyone has done it and the pros and cons.

We’ve used Eurorail in France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria over different times with no issue. Just ensure that you also get seat reservations if they are required. They are a few extra Euros but for us it’s worth the peace of mind.

When I've looked at what individual tix costs vs. Eurail + seat fees, individual tix are always cheaper.

This. If its your last trip OP I'm assuming you aren't a young buck? The only way the Eurail is a better option financially is if you are literally riding trains daily, which I doubt you want to do. And frankly is pointless.
Short train tickets are generally pretty cheap.
If you aren't 25 and staying in Hostels, the best thing to do is plan your trip and look at the cost of tickets. Then decide if the pass is worth it.
There's really no need to buy 98% of train tickets more than 7 days or so out. Really 2 days prior is normally fine.

For such a short time, plan your destinations out of Paris, make your hotel reservations, and then make your travel purchases (first class tickets with guaranteed seating).

I agree. I looked at it when I was there for a few months, and it was definitely more for the backpacker set and random travels based on someone they met at the club the night before.
