Delta Changes

I had been reading that Delta was changing Comfort+ and Main Cabin, but trying to book a flight today made me realize how fricking stupid it is. I have always booked Comfort+, but now there are Comfort+ Classic and Comfort+ Premium... You sit in the same area, but one supposedly gives you more miles + same day refund vs e-credit for Comfort+ Classic and fewer miles
The difference in price is almost $100 per flight, so then I looked at Main, and they have 3 tiers now, basic, classic, and premium where you still all sit together but you get more miles, choose seats, board earlier, refund eligible.
As a long-term Delta flier (joined SkyMiles in 2012) who takes 3-5 flights a year these changes aren't great at all. For what use to be standard as a Platinum SkyMiles Member is now costing more and there is less chances of a free upgrade.

Welcome to airlines trying to nickel and dime you on everything. All airlines are doing this. First they charged for bags, then regular economy vs basic economy, then seats, and now they even split economy plus into what you're describing. I gave up on chasing status a few years ago. Now a flight is just a way to get from point A to point B. Might as well do it as cheaply as possible

I flew 100+ segments a year in/out of ATL on DL for three years (2005-2008) until I moved to IAH, on fares that could be $1800 from ATL to Cincinnati in coach, etc.) I could count the free upgrades I got on one hand. It's not worth getting worried over. I'm never booking a flight without being able to choose a seat, no matter what I have to pay in order to do it.
Do look at trying to do it in private mode, and figure out if the "add on" to the lesser fare is cheaper than the "less ratchet" fare that includes seat selection or whatever you're most worried about.

As in private browsing mode? That could give different pricing?

Yes, they monitor your frequency of searches.

Do NOT search from the Delta app. They track every time you search, how many times you search, how you change the dates when you search, what you click on, and don't click on, and price it against you. "It seems like Tiger91 is willing to leave between Tuesday and Friday, but not on Monday," etc.
Even better, if you go to AA or UA or SWA and search for the same fares, third party cookies will get dumped on your device that Delta pays to have access to, and then the prices *may* go down, because they know you're shopping. But, if you are trying to fly out of a small market like Lafayette or BTR, they know they don't need to. The permutations are endless.
I won't call it nefarious, it's perfectly legit profit seeking behavior, but it's easy to avoid. ETA: Use private mode with Google Flights, find the flight, and book it with no price seeking history once you get the itinerary done.
