No. You’ve missed the optimal window of germination for some weed seeds but certainly not all. Really never too late to apply, more so about optimal times to apply for certain weeds. You’ll likely just need to use a bit more post-emergent herbicide than had you applied pre-emergent a month ago.

ETA: Don’t forget you need to water pre-emergent in after application to activate it. I’m not seeing rain forecast for BR for the next week +, so break out the sprinklers if you have too….

If we put down prodiamine down in late Jan, is now a good time for Specticle fo sedges and doveweed? I normally wait until mid-late April for that second round of pre-emerg.

Getting there for non-optimal.
My process = Jan. 1st and Feb. 1st every year (or whatever the 1st weekend is in those two months).
The screwed up thing in S. Louisiana is that we always have that heat wave week in January

I’d wait until mid-April to apply Specticle for Doveweed, and other annual weeds whose seeds germinate a little later, at soil temperatures near 70 F - it’s when I apply it on my lawn for Doveweed etc. And if we have a particularly wet summer a 2nd application of Specticle can be applied in late July-early August.

These recommendations on Specticle application for Doveweed were given to me by Dr. Ron Strahan, state lawn weed control extension specialist with the LSU AgCenter.

Ron was the state weed control extension specialist based on the LSU BR campus at the at time he provided me the recommendation on Specticle use and Doveweed control…..

That said, as a former multi-decade LSU AgCenter professor myself, I’m well aware he now he has an administrative role as the Northwest Regional Director with the AgCenter, but he’s still happy to answer questions on weed control if one emails him (at least he told me so last time I reached out to him) but I longer provide his contact info to posters on this board b/c of his change in duties….
