Bloomberg on the "fate of Hollywood"

Bloomberg did a clip for YouTube about Hollywood's decline, and it's pretty interesting. At less than 10 minutes, worth a watch. Several things have combined to put the SoCal film industry in terminal straits. They go into the stuff everyone talks about... Covid, the rise of cheap Internet entertainment amongst others... but they also focus on something that many analysts have overlooked, namely just how much the series of endless union strikes have driven work to distant states and countries. And it's not the stars or studio executives or producers that this is hurting, but the grunt workers who put it all together. Lots of interviews here with writers, grips, carpenters, etc. And it gives the scope of how the town is hollowing out. One of the unions lost something like 18k members because they'd simply given up after the bulk of local film work slowed down so badly, with many leaving the industry and moving to other states and other non-film jobs. They have interviews with writers that used to make big money and now are working part time in retail positions to make ends meet. Lots of guys used to have high incomes doing Hollywood work are now driving Ubers. Again, while their income may be down somewhat, it's not the guy mouthing off at the Oscars or on some social media account that has suffered. It's the guys in craft services and electrical work and sound editing etc that are throwing in the towel.
