To start, I will say I was biased. This might be one of my favorite movies of all time. To see it was up for Best Picture was a nice surprise. I knew it wouldn't win Best Picture, but I do think it should have won for Cinematography.
Any thoughts on this movie?

I loved it. It hit me on a very emotional level multiple times.
Beautiful, quiet movie.

It has my vote for best picture and best cinematography and I watched every single movie that was nominated for best picture and best international film last night

would have won more if it wasn't a Netflix distributed film perhaps. there are still some anti-netflix folks that vote.

Watched it last night because of this thread.
i don't know how to feel about it other than I have no desire to ever watch it again so that probably tells me it didn't do it for me.
Thought the acting and the cinematography were great. Writing was great. Good story that felt very real and even though I usually like a depressing movie from time to time, this one just made me too sad. I didn't cry but just almost an entire movie of "I feel really sad for this guy." And at no point does it get better. Man I was really hoping he'd make a connection with the conservationist there towards the end to provide a little glimmer of hope. But, to no avail.

That's pretty much how I felt.

I think that’s the point of the movie.
There is no point to your life, yet moments are beautiful. There is no optimized result. Sometimes you waste your life to grief. Sometimes you don’t get on with it. You’ll be forgotten in under a century most likely. Yet your life contains beautiful and profound moments.
It's interesting the different perspectives here. I cried like a baby watching that movie because it was the first time a film encapsulated how I feel to my core. There was nothing depressing about it to me. Just reality.

Really good movie. This and Aftersun have been my favorite movies of the past few years. Almost understated on how they’re presented but stuck with me afterword. In my opinion representative of a true great movie.

Of all the nominees I watched, it was by far my favorite.

Its worth a watch-its a really good film-great acting, beautiful cinematography and setting. But while there are some sad parts, the entire thing isn't some big sorrow-fest. Its definitely worth a watch.

It’s one of the best films I’ve seen in years.

I watched it the morning it came out and started the first thread on it and this is what I took from it I’ll just copy and paste.
Watched it on a cold Friday morning by the fire with a cup of coffee and it hit me in the feels. Definitely going to look into reading Denis Johnson’s stuff soon
I’ll also add that William H Macy was fantastic in his role

It’s sad but thoughtful. As a man growing up waiting for some kind of revelation as to what his life means, going through pain and heartache as the years pass by to find yourself as an old man still wondering. Until one day it hits that being a part of this world and experiencing its beauty and progression and feeling all it has to offer and being a part of something bigger than oneself should be enough for any man. Legacy or no.
