Say we didn’t attack Iran. What happens when Iran shuts off the Strait of Hormuz whenever…

they feel like it?
Would we be under the constant threat of overnight $120-$200bbl oil?

Iran’s threat really backfired on them. If they try to choke the Strait, it starves them of all income. That’s why they relented yesterday.

It’s largely a hollow threat that they only played as a last resort.
Shutting it off in isolation would turn the entire world against them.
Hence why they never did it until pushed to extremes.

They could just pick and choose which vessels they let through.
Oil could shoot up any minute they want.

That wasn’t the global threat had we not acted.
They made the global threat directly at the negotiating table: enough enriched material to make 11 nuclear weapons.

How many times did they close it off previously? Zero times

How is doubling the price of oil a hollow threat?

I know, but how many people knew how vulnerable oil prices were to the strait until now?

Because everyone knows they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.
They shut down the strait then even their “allies” are even against them.
Hence why Trump was begging for Chinas help.
This is why even with Iraq baiting them they didn’t do it in the past

Maybe I’m just stupid.
If the straight is 30 miles wide.. how hard is it to get ships through it ?
Surely there not in danger the entire way through
Also, yet another reason America should have its entire oil supply in house and not relying on goat frickers to shut off our supply

The threat is still there though. We’ve all seen what they do to their own people.

The mostly peaceful regime, right?

It is certainly not a credible threat. Especially not $200 oil.
This is not the 1970s. There are many other sources of oil, and the Saudis are no longer dependent on the Strait of Hormuz.

Yes geography exists.
Because someone might do something that is detrimental to themselves is a dumb reason for war.
There are numerous other global choke points where similar economic issues can arise

Iran has never mined the Persian Gulf!

It hit $120 in the blink of an eye. We are lucky we already had our Navy in the gulf.

Not really.

Oh really?
How about the Suez Canal, the Panama Canal, the malacca strait etc
The suez was shut down for much longer than this
It cost Egypt.

Iran has not been operating in isolation. They've been getting funding and weapons and materials from Russia and China. They've (Iran) also reportedly been supporting militia and terrorist groups in other parts of the middle east. That doesn't seem like a passive country or a hollow threat to me. It seems like a persistent threat and actual source of conflict in and around the Persian Gulf.
