Bryan Bresee 5th year Option

I think there's a fairly early May deadline for 5th year options. I think Bresee's projection of a 5th year is close to 14 million.
Yay? Nay?

I'll pay 14 for two reasons. We are still thin at DT. I want to see if he can get better vs the run. Was Always the question when he was drafted.

as much deserving shite i gave him at the time, he did seem to start doing better against the run and had a more stout presence than prior. Sacks went down in this staley system. We may be forced to apply the option and maybe he could be a reasonable extension that gets done makes sense for both parties.

I don't think we can afford to let young DT/DE go at this time.

Don't think they do it..

I really like Bresee the person, but the player has been inconsistent. He has flashes of greatness and then goes into obscurity for a while. I'm not sure that is worth the 5th year. I'm torn on this one

They are going to decline it, not because they don't want Bresee but because that is going to be far above his average (unless he blows up huge this year).
More likely he gets extended this year for around $7-8 mil per. If the extension happens late in the year or after the season it will likely be closer to $10+ mil per.

If he wants the second contract like most first rounders do why do that? Great for the FO very true.

Because he hasn't been that great to where his value is in the teens, so he can either bet on himself that he'll have a great season, but risk injury and his stock going down further, or he can take the money offered in front of him.
That's why James Cook got robbed by signing during last season, because he didn't want to risk injury and be stuck with little to nothing.

Some say we won’t pick up his option but will try to offer him a new contract. Like we did with Ruiz

That's pretty common around the league when you have a guy you are valuing at under what the 5th year option would be, which is extremely common at some positions (HB, IOL, TE, DT, ILB, and S) because they tend to average far less.
Playing time plays a huge factor in what they are entitled to for the 5th year (post season honors as well, but if they are THAT good you usually pick up their option regardless), so if a guy is a full time starter they will have an inflated 5th year compared to others at their position. Instead of being paid the average of the 3rd to 25th players it kicks up a lot higher.

In a year where somehow almost every single player on defense got better under Staley, Bresee managed to look worse. That should tell you all that you need to know.
