Iceland Trip-any advice

Going to Iceland Early to mid September. Renting a camper van and doing the Golden Circle, Ring Road, and Snaefellsjokull peninsula. Will have 8 full days counting our arrival day and flying out on the 9th day.
I know this maybe a bit rushed but it’s all the time we had. We are actually not going to spend anytime in Reykjavik at all in order to maximize our time around the island.
Any suggestion on things to pick up at the grocery store before we begin our journey. Suggestions on good campsite are welcomed as well.

Several people on here have been…. and I’m probably missing other trip reports, but it’s been a fairly popular destination on here actually

Don't eat the shark. Just trust me on this.
Svinafellsjokull is where parts of several big movies have been filmed (Interstellar being one) and it is well worth the trip. It has a glacier on top of a live volcano and the sights are indescribable. Touring the ring of fire is a solid plan. I personally thought the blue lagoon was overrated, but I'm probably in the minority on that.

Nole's link has a lot of good info and some links to some other discussions. You'll love the trip. Don't have much I can recomend as far as camper trip goes as we did a scheduled bus tour around the island.
One place we like was Earth Lagoon Mývatn. It isn't as famous as some of the other thermal baths, but it also wasn't nearly as crowded. It was fantastic. They also have their own brewery and have a swim up bar that serves some of their beer and have an IPA that is made with geothermal bread that is fantastic, very unique IPA flavor and not nearly as bitter as normal.
Some of the other thermal baths may be more picturesque and all, but that one worked out really well for us for the overall experience.

Waterproof EVERYTHING including pants, shoes/boots, a heavy outer jacket, as well as a lighter jacket. You can go from rainstorms to sunny to flurries and back in a span of 15 minutes. Also some way to communicate with the outside world. Some stretches of the outer highway can be quite desolate and you might not run into another person for miles and miles in the event you need some kind of assistance.
It is a SPECTACULAR country, especially if you are into geological features and landscapes. Some places felt like I was standing on another planet. I really enjoyed the southern city of Vik for a day or two stop, but there are so many different sights, waterfalls, and small museums tucked away along the highway that are quite interesting. Try to hit the major touristy spots early in the day, some can get quite crowded.
And as someone else mentioned, I would highly recommend NOT eating the shark.

You can drive around the whole island in a day, there is a review in the pinned thread.

Yea as others have said, the shark wasn’t particularly good. The Horse and Puffin though, both fantastic.

Your trip isn't rushed. It's the perfect length for driving the Ring Road.

I went in mid-late October and saw them 3 out of 7 nights. Nights I didn't see them was due to cloud cover. There are websites that tracks the aurora activity to keep an eye on. I used an Icelandic site when I was there that was more specific, I forgot what it is, but here is one to bookmark.

I know you asked about food suggestions, mine's about traffic. Know the rules when driving in a traffic circle.
