I've been twice (2017 and 2018) and very much want to go back again. Here are some reasons to go:
First of all, the scenery, architecture, etc. are all stunning. Here are just a few pics from my 2017 trip to the largest island, Sao Miguel, to get you started:
Oh, and here's maybe the most famous view on Sao Miguel. It was too foggy in 2017, but I did get this pic when I went back the following year:
The islands are very much Portuguese, but there's an American flavor, as everyone there has relatives in the US. There were Azorean settlements in the US as early as the days of the whaling industry, but there was a big influx after the Capelinhos eruption and resulting devastation in 1957, when Congress passed a special amnesty allowing Azoreans to immigrate. So everyone speaks English.
The islands are very different. Some, like Sao Miguel, haven't had volcanic eruptions in recorded history, while others, such as Pico, have active systems. Here's the view from the peak of Mt. Pico (the highest mountain in Portugal), when looking west over the neighboring island of Faial:
In addition to the amazing hike up the mountain, Pico has a great wine culture, an interesting lava cave worth exploring.

Terceira, on the other hand, has the stunningly beautiful small city of Angra.
Here are some 2017 photos:
In 2018, I was in Angra for the Sanjoaninas Festival, which was fantastic.
Terceira also has a unique extinct volcano that had all its lava drain out while still liquid, so you can literally descend down into the former magma chamber. This is the view looking up.
There's lots of wonderful food on the islands, especially the seafood, but you also must try the alcatra on Terceira, a kind of beef stew.
I could say lots more, but that should be enough to convince you. The Azores are very undertouristed. Lots more people should go.
