Resign Fortner and we have Ruiz still. That is pretty deep line.

Serious question - is it possible Fortner plays C and McCoy moves to a Guard spot? Personally, I think Simpkins is better than Ruiz. Don't know what salary cap implications would be of parting ways with Ruiz...maybe he's worth keeping as a reserve.

Yes.
Fortner at C is better than any 2nd OG for the same price compared to McCoy.
If we do this you 100% keep Ruiz because he can backup C/ OG. Now you have 3 guys who can play C, a better OG, and a backup. Unless you have a trade for Ruiz already.
If we resign Fortner then we kind of just cornered the OL market and have leverage with Ruiz.

McCoy isn’t playing guard

And Fortner is not better at center

Highly doubtful. Do we really want to risk McCoy getting injured and starting Ruiz already without a backup C?

He is by virtue of the fact that he actually plays.

I think he's saying Fortner at C and McCoy at guard is better than McCoy at center and Ruiz at Guard. Can Fortner play guard?

or we can be saying Fortner at Center for cheap and Trade mccoy for a 2nd and gain cap space is better than Mccoy alone.

Well any line is better without a Caesar Ruiz on it.

We don't gain space by trading McCoy, we lose it. That's why moving McCoy to OG actually makes more sense than trading him.
Fortner for $8-$10 mil will be a higher quality starter at his position than whatever OG2 we sign for $8-$10mil. McCoy would also be a higher quality OG than the OG we sign for $8-$10mil.
Just because it sounds funny and looks weird doesn't mean it isn't true.

1.) we barely lose this year but gain a ton next year.
2.) contracts are fluid and can be restructured in a trade scenario.
3.) the value in a draft pick compensation could be big for our rebuild.

I believe this could be true but can't we find a better RG than Fortner to sign a longer term contract?

1. We lose money AND the all star OL and then have less money to replace him. Terrible plan.
2. See #1
3. Highly doubtful we get a good enough 2nd in order to trade him and even if we do see #1.

center market is nuts right now w/ not a lot of options out there. would be prime time to max value mccoy leaving.

Sounds great if you have Linderbaum on the phone. I'm not resigning Fortner to trade McCoy.
Even if we resign Fortner, McCoy would be better at OG than any money we have left to spend there. Its not that complicated.
If you trade McCoy you are 100% downgrading 1 of C/ OG.
The only true "upgrade" without breaking the bank is resigning the C with starting value and moving your all star to OG.

signed for 3 yr for 81, don't be so quick to say a team wouldn't give up a 2 for mccoy under contract
