Wife and I are thinking about taking road trip to Charleston. 4-5 nights. Leaving from Baton Rouge. Any suggestons, time of year, halfway point, restraunts etc.

If you take the south route you could stop in auburn. If you go thru Atlanta you could stop in Athens. But honestly…unless you just really don’t want to fly I don’t know why you wouldn’t. There’s not much to see or do until you get to Charleston. And you’re gonna burn 4 days driving there and back. Just my opinion
Charleston is great y’all will have fun

More than halfway, but the best place to stop along the way is Savanna. It a nice place to spend a day or two.
In Charleston, we like to stay at the Vendue. It is in a great location, within easy walking distance to most places you would want to go including many restaurants.
Favorite restaurants are
FIG
SNOB
Anson
Peninsula Grill

Just drive straight or fly
I used to live in Charleston and drove back and forth to NO a few times. All the different ways suck and take forever.
Unless you really want to stop in Atlanta or Jacksonville on the way, then have at it. By the time you get to Golden Isles or Savannah you're almost there.

There is a local restaurant called Taco Boy we seem to eat at each time we're in that area, there is one in Charleston and another one in Folly Beach. There may be more locations than those two.
There is nothing extravagant to it but most people seem to check out the Angle Tree, we done it once just to say we did it. The main road we took to get to the Angle Tree, if you follow it several more miles there is a little country store with quality of food that will rival high end restaurants. I know I have a picture or two of it and can find the name if you think that you would head out to that area.
If old civil war fortifications interests you Fort Sumter and the Battery can kill some time.
The old city market is another "must do" for the first time visiting the area, be sure to get a pecan praline from the candy store at the side of the market closer to the port, if heading towards the port it'll be on the left.
We've been there several times over the years, there is a lot to do that we've not done yet like go to the aquarium or patriots point.

Very average, fine for drinks but wouldn't be in my top 30 places around town to send people. I wouldn't even put it in the top 5 places on Folly Beach.

Huh? You mean the Angel Oak?
It's cool, but not necessarily worth the drive from downtown, though the OP could possibly see it on the way in as it's just south of the Savannah Highway outside town.
OP, there are a number of Charleston threads in here where myself and others have answered pretty much all your questions with the exception of where to stop on the way over here. Savannah makes the most sense but that's only 2 hours away.
I can answer any specific questions you might have.

Home Team BBQ in Sullivan Island. Chicken wings with Alabama white sauce, and Slightly North of Broad in Charleston.
Savannah is more than 1/2 way. I would recommend a couple days there then a couple days in Charleston. Go ahead and just make the return trip in one shot. Not too bad. I’ve done it twice.

Sullivan's has a cool vibe and Home Team is great on a beach day but the scene at the downtown location is way better, and as far as BBQ goes, it's not nearly as good as Lewis. If you go to the downtown location you can hit Home Team for a few wings and a game changer and then walk to Lewis for the main course. Great beer list at Edmund's Oast right next door so you can knock out three spots.
