Gas vs hybrid

I have to buy a new car and I’ve zeroed in on a 2026 Honda Civic. The problem I’m having is should I go with a gas (non turbo, lx and sport trims) or hybrid. I’ve never owned a hybrid and never really wanted to but Honda is pushing them really hard right now. If you buy a civic hybrid they have a $1000 rebate plus .5 less of a percent financing through them, if you go gas it’s only $750 rebate and you finance at half a percent higher. I’ve priced them out with a few dealerships and to be honest it’s slight keas than $2000 to step up from the sport gas to the hybrid sport. Any recommendations on which way I should go?

Not as comfy, phone might blow up, great mileage tho!

Why exactly? Brand loyalty?
I mean they aren't the worst choice but also leave something to be desired. I'd go with several other brands before a Honda and especially a Civic.
At least it isn't a Nissan

Rented a rav4 hybrid for a recent trip in Colorado. Was pretty blown away when we had more than a quarter tank left end of trip.
Just bought a hybrid Honda crv because of it.
Pretty great.
It’s a shame we didn’t all just go all it on the Toyota hybrid engines. They are great and fit existing infrastructure.

Another thing... my mom got a hybrid corolla or camry, was sold on the gas money savings. Turned out that savings got eaten up in insurance, it's more expensive to insure the hybrid.

The annual tag tax/fee is also more, but not by a huge margin. They are talking about nearly doubling that fee though in SC.

Hybrid Honda Civic models often have slightly higher insurance premiums than gasoline-only versions, generally costing about 5% to 15% more. While some insurers offer hybrid/green discounts, higher insurance costs for hybrids are primarily driven by higher purchase prices and increased repair expenses due to specialized components.

Not really brand loyalty as I’ve never owned a Honda before. I have two trucks so I didn’t need an suv and my 2016 Camry fit the bill perfectly until a deer took it out. The new Camrys are all hybrid now and they’re all over $30,000 even the stripped down LE. I’m considering a Mazda 3 too because of no turbo and an actual 6 speed transmission instead of a cvt but waiting on the one dealer to get back to me on a price. My friend and his wife recently bought a Chevy Trax but I just don’t trust that 3 cyl engine at all. I wanted simple basic and cheap that’s why I was drawn to the Civic LX and Sport. The dealer gave me a quote on a sport hybrid I guess hoping I’d step up and take the bait and since it was only $1900 more I was considering it plus the sport hybrid has a sunroof and heated seats in that up charge.

I’ve also considered this strongly and yeah SC is about to stick it to EV and hybrid owners here soon. I asked my insurance and they said it would go up $43 a month.

I think people typically regret sunroofs.
Expect higher insurance premiums and extra annual tax/fee beyond what gas car costs.

What kind of crack are you smoking? I’ve owned three Hondas and never had a problem with any of them. They will last forever if you take care of them

I guess I almost fell for the salesman’s trick. Send me a good price on what I asked for and then throw in the hook “but wait, check this out! For only a little more I can give you this at a bigger rebate and cheaper financing!”

Just buy an American car. Or be part of the problem.

At least you paused... my mom was like, "sure! yay!".. then near instant regrets, lol.
I think the difference in comfort would give me pause- I don't know about you, but we drive stuff til the wheels fall off, being uncomfortable would be a deal breaker for a long term ride.

Ford and GM don’t sell cars anymore.lol

Same here. I drove the Civic gas but it wasn’t long enough to know if it would be uncomfortable or not, seemed fine the little bit I was in it though. That’s why Mazda is in the running too. For the same price you get upscale interior and no cvt.

It's more the civic I don't care for. The inside ergonomics feel more cramped than they should be, and a family member had one crap out right after the warranty lapsed (although another one is running fine long after.)
I don't have an issue with Honda...just not my first choice. Probably 3 or 4th. But I HATE the CVT

That’s because men drive trucks and women drive vans.
SUV’s are in-betweeners.
Altimas are for the dindos and food delivery
CRV’s and Pilots are for the elderly

Well I qualify for a civic then because I’m past the halfway point of my lifespan.haha

I am not a fan of cvt either which is why I’m looking at Mazda too. I know they say you need to change the fluid at exactly 30,000 miles if you want it to last though, no getting around that or you’re asking for problems.

Recently went through the similar process for wifes new Sportage. We bought the standard hybrid. For a small engine it is extremely quick.
Battery should last over 150,000 miles but expensive when needing to replace.
Loving it thus far.
