This is a weird one. Police have urged county residents to stay indoors, stay with a buddy, and have closed schools the rest of the week. LINK

quote:

"As this remains an active investigation, with the suspect at large, law enforcement is urging residents in the Torrey and surrounding area to take extra precautions, such as locking doors, remaining at home or with others, and being vigilant about surroundings. Please report any suspicious activity to 911," the Department of Public Safety said.

quote:

"Due to unfolding events in the county, out of an abundance of caution and concern for student and public safety, schools will be closed tomorrow and Friday. We will also have counselors in place to support students when we are back in session next week. We will communicate updates as things unfold," the Wayne County School District said in a statement.

So the victims ages are 30,60, and 80, but they closed schools and government offices? Why? Is the suspect a government employee or is giving all the students and government employees an automatic day off the go to response now for every event?

They should also wear a mask... to flatten the curve.

Wayne County is one of my favorite on the state. Stretches from Capital Reef NP on the West and parts of Canyonlands NP in the east. Also one of the most remote counties in the country. The permanent population of the entire county is just over 2,600 in a county that is roughly the size of Delaware.

In this part of the world, most residents will be armed. It's the tourists that wouldn't be.

So much for the rugged individualism. Instead of facing dangers head on, we now teach children and encourage adults to stay indoors, stay home or in groups.

Besides middle class liberal white women, the biggest threat to the country is the sentiment behind the phrase “out of an abundance of caution”.

OP needs to add this:

“Dispatch received a call about two deceased women found on a hiking trail Wednesday afternoon, the Utah Department of Public Safety said in a news release early Thursday.

A third woman was found dead at a home in Wayne County, the release said“

So likely a mom and daughter killed on the trail and an 80 year old in her home?

I’m not understanding why schools would close for this .. but then I think, a teacher wouldn’t sacrifice a good crisis that gets them out of working

I understand, but the issue is how large and spread out the area is with such a low population. Law enforcement response could be really slow.

Does I-70 pass through there?

No. It's about 30-40 miles to the north.

I don't think so in this case. There are not the jobs there for that population.

Then it’s not the I-70 killer. Figured he’d came out of retirement?

Yeah I don’t really get it either. What authorities don’t understand is when you close elementary schools, you take away your baby sitters so parents have to take off and therefore your work force shuts down.

It would be better to add an officer to each school, assuming there is one already, so make that 2. A school that has 500 kids has 2 officers, instead of making 200 parents from the workforce take off work.

But I also get the idea that if something were to ever happen at a bus stop, school, etc it would be terrible optics.

They don't have that many officers (deputies in this case.) Only 8-10 deputies to patrol an area the size of Delaware. There are only 2500 people in the entire country. It's one of the most remote in the lower 48.

High percentage of ranchers and farmers. Mom and dad will be home anyway.

ETA: Torrey is the Gateway town to Capitol Reef NP.

Hope they find the person soon. I'll be in that area in 6 months and will not have a firearm with me. Ugh.
