If Lane Kiffin does not succeed at LSU, it will not be for a lack of spending. On3's Pete Nakos reported that LSU has already topped $40 million in NIL money to build their roster for 2026. The Tigers were mentioned as the top spenders in college football this offseason as Nakos spoke with 14 general managers.

"Of the 14 Power Four general managers and staffers that On3 spoke with, 10 mentioned LSU as the top spender in the transfer portal," Nakos wrote on Tuesday. "In their first transfer portal with new head coach Lane Kiffin, the Tigers ranked No. 2 in the On3 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.

"Multiple general managers believe that LSU has the highest payroll in the sport entering the 2026 season, exceeding $40 million. The Tigers landed quarterback Sam Leavitt, offensive tackle Jordan Seaton and EDGE Princewill Umanmielen, ultimately bringing in 40 new players via the transfer portal."

A $40 Million roster to go with a $90 Million head coach. Must be nice…I’m legit jealous.

I seem to remember a lot of rocks being thrown at A&M for "buying a roster" ... It appears those rocks were being launched in front of a glass maison

2,3, 4 years ago... Tiger fans were "we want players with chest and heart" not paid merchants.

But now...

No, we don't forget.

So they should sit back and lose to all the schools with "paid merchants" or play the game the way it is now?

This could be a Florida Marlins of the 90's type of move. Pour it all in to compete for a NC over a 3-4 year span.....go broke....replenish funds....compete again?

If so, honestly competing for a NC for 3-4 years over a 10 year span isn't terrible logic.

LSU had a four year cycle before NIL already

$40 Million roster

Doesn't mean shite if they're all a year or two out of High School, were Bryce Underwood or DJ Lagway worth anything after their performances last year?

No shite....they've had a few.
My point is only relevant to this NIL era. If you have 200MM over a ten year span to spend then the plan might be to spend 60% of it in 3 years and get a few shots at the NC. There are not a lot of programs that are going to be able to be a Top 5 spender every single year (but maybe LSU found some money to be one of those programs, I have no idea). So if you're not one of those programs then the plan should be to push all the chips in when you have a window.

Just 2 years ago LSU fans cried about Ohio State spending money on their roster for 30M. Gonna be fun watching them call the pot kettle black

Where's the tipping point?

Cost/benefit? Like to see a definable breakdown on how winning financially affects schools across the board beyond high-fives on the Quad and t-shirt printing.

Thanks Ohio State.
Thanks Texas.

You have a handful of teams doubling in spending compared to every other big spender and now Lane enters and doubles what was doubled. Funny if money drives us back to only 3 or 4 teams can actually win it like a decade ago.

I'm not going to throw stones at all. This is the way the game is being played

I think enforcement is coming because if not, you will have too many college kids making more than NFL starters and it has to have a balance

Until then, you have to spend to win

They're not. It's mostly experienced upperclassmen.
