Or is that just an old fashion constitutional thing we just ignore these days?

War and strikes are very different things.

for a strike, nope.

war, yes.

nobody thinks we are going to war with Iran. it will be a precision strike using those ginsu hellfire missiles. Turn the Ayatollah and a few of the mullahs into soup and it would be over.

We’re doing g a surgical strike, not a war.

And Trump will do it better than Clinton and Barry did.

Have to? No.Will he? Unlikely. He has 60 days after the conflict starts and another 30 days after that if Congress doesn't approve.

We can’t get Congress to fund DHS right now. FEMA is part of DHS. Tornado season starts very soon here in the South. If Congress cant agree to fund FEMA then you can hang up getting Congressional approval on military action anywhere. He will have to do it on his own if he thinks it needs doing.

This reminds me. Were these stipulations outlined in the War Powers Act?

We should just take it out of the Constitution if we aren’t going to abide by it. War Powers Act is unconstitutional too.

Doesn't matter. Congress, in its infinite wisdom, gutted its own war powers the moment it allowed a president enough unilateral runway (90 days) to fully entangle the country in a conflict before requiring formal approval.

By the time Congress is “consulted,” troops are deployed, resources committed, alliances activated, and political momentum locked in. At that stage, withholding approval is no longer a neutral option. It becomes defunding soldiers already in harm’s way. That is not a meaningful check.

The Dems will vote against anything Trump wants to do period! If Iran was minutes away from launching a nuke they still wouldn’t vote for approval. What people will have to ask themselves is do you trust Congress more on this or Trump? That’s just the size of it. It may need to be done that way and Trump could even want approval but the Dems will shoot it down no matter if it needed do or not. I leave it with Trump. He is the only politician that has even attempted to be honest with the public. He looks at the intel. If he says we need to then I’m totally ok with it approval or no approval.

Yes. That comes directly from the War Powers Resolution.

The president can deploy forces without prior approval but must notify Congress within 48 hours. From that point, there’s a 60-day window to obtain authorization, plus up to 30 more days to withdraw if Congress does not approve.

In theory, that preserves congressional authority. In practice, once troops are deployed, political pressure makes withholding approval far less realistic.
