So, my mother-in-law just got a $100,000 electric wheelchair from Medicare.

WTF? My wife was telling me earlier that her wheelchair costs $100,000, and I was in disbelief. She said she thought her father was wrong until she saw the invoice.
How the frick are we paying $100k for a fricking electric wheelchair? This is outrageous. I’ll see if I can verify it further and get more details like the brand and manufacturer.

Never heard of one quite that expensive but I have had people try and sell my mom 25k wheelchairs while she was basically drugged out of her mind. Amazing that that is allowed.

At that price it is probably completely customized to the user and would not be able to resell.

Medicare has always been slow in figuring out they are massively overpaying on medical equipment. I briefly worked at a medical supply company while in school that was pushing us to sell ‘diabetic shoes’ as that was the hot thing at the time. Those shoes were garbage, looked like something you’d get from Dollar General. Really had no medical value at all. We bought them for $15-$25 wholesale and Medicare would reimburse the company $600+ per pair sold.
I didn’t stay employed there long because shite like that was the norm.

Once you have to take care of an elderly person you realize how much of this country is trying to scam the elderly. It is awful.

They are in an independent living facility, but they pay for caregivers to be there most of the day.

Like most things medical, it’s a grift. They know insurance or the government is going to wind up paying in the end, so why not ask for $100k.
