LSU course - UPDATE - it’s so unimaginably terrible!

I haven’t played there in ten or more years and it wasn’t that bad then, but I’ve read more recent stuff that paints an awful picture. Is it really that bad? Would it be worth my money to go out there or should I stay away?

Man, I hate to hear that. I had some fun times out there with friends in the past and I’d love to go back but even at $20 something dollars, I don’t want to waste my money if it’s not at least half-arse maintained.

They keep the grass cut somewhat and that’s it. Better off going to Clark, City, Fennwood, or The Pines.

What’s ironic is some of those trees that were planted 25 years ago are finally giving the course some character. But the conditions are abysmal

Just rode by to check it out. Greens look o. Course has a few issues. Not that bad not that good. I would play it for the price

Maybe I’ll go tomorrow. It sure is cheap there so I’m intrigued, especially since I’m leaning back into the game.
Went to City Park again today (really starting to like that course) and shot an 89, birdied #6 and that was my first birdie in 20 years. That’s really good for me
. It’s a slow process lol

I played the LSU course this afternoon.
Never again!
The fairways were so tall that it required more than natural concentration to mentally mark where my ball went just so I could find it. I found perfectly good golf balls on more fairways than not that people hit and couldn’t find.
The signage directing you to the next hole was pathetic, the tee boxes were barely recognizable due to the lack of markers (some of them simply looked like hills in the middle of the fairway), the amount of trash on the course made it feel like I was somewhere in north Baton Rouge (if the ghetto had a golf course haha), and the greens - my oh my, the greens.
The greens were soooo terrible. All of them have broadleaf weeds growing out of them. Sand traps are mostly grassed over. My cart didn’t have working brakes and resulted in almost crashing into another cart driven by some retard student who came around a corner too fast and almost hit me head on since I had nowhere to swerve to and my brakes were nearly nonexistent. This is a big liability issue for the university.
It was dirt cheap since the cute student worker only charged me and my son the student rate, but even that was too much.
It was the most un-fun round of golf of my life, and I didn’t even score that badly. Never again. The worst BREC course is infinitely better than the LSU course. They need to completely shut it down.
The best thing about it was I found five Titleist Pro V 1’s, other usable Titleist balls, and a handful of good Nike and Taylormade balls in fairways that other people lost in the high grass
. I guess that paid for my trip lol.

I played it once back when we had that warm spell in November and walked 9 holes. The round was just for the exercise/nostalgia, and not for the quality of golf. I probably found 25 decent balls. Some were just in and around the fairway like you, but most were on the slope of the canal on the 1st hole. It was easy to walk down, wasn't overgrown or muddy, and absolutely paid for my round, and then some.
I can confirm the rest of what you said. The bunkers are awful and the greens were like putting on a Plinko board.
The whole thing made me sad. I go all the way back to the days when the front 9 was on the other side of Nicholson and the first part of the back 9 was where the Box is now. Students could walk for $2.50 and that went down to $1.25 at twilight. And Mike Johnson only hired top-tier co-eds to run the register in the pro shop. To me, the whole thing was better than any country club
It is sad to see an old friend in such bad shape, but that course needs to be euthanized.

I wonder if the demise the course has been manufactured by refusing to provide adequate funds to maintain the course as part of the plan to get rid of the course and build another Coliseum.

It is so bad that it HAS to be intentional, so I’d believe that theory.
The least they could do is get some student volunteers out there to clean up the ponds and ditches and spend about three hours going to all 18 greens spraying them with some simple herbicide. They could do that and nothing else and it would improve the look and feel tremendously, even with the grass being cut at the same height it is now.

this is exactly it. They can now justify closing the course due to limited play.

I hate to hear this every time a thread like this pops up.
I used to love being able to stop by during the week and play a round. If anything, just being able to hit a bucket of balls off of grass a couple times a week was worth it.
I haven't been in at least 3 years because it wasn't great back then and I lost a ball in the middle of the fairway.

I am surprised LSU has not gone all in on a golf course, we have a killer ag program, feel like it would be a great training ground for students. Plus we have a legit golf team that would benefit from it. Seeing all these schools pour millions into the golf program has me wondering when it is going to happen for LSU

I first played the LSU course in 2013 and that was my first thought then. I’ve never gotten “lost” on a course before, but I did at LSU multiple times. Even finding the first tee box isn’t easy if you’ve never been. It has zero flow from green to tee box on a lot of holes.

I thought the same thing yesterday. They could really go all out with getting the Turf Management program students to manage the entire course.

I know the Golf team plays at U Club, but I wonder if the Turf Management students work on that course instead? Not sure why they didn't want to just use the course the university already has. It's a large 18 hole course and could really be gorgeous if kept up and managed well.

Yea, it was a bit confusing the first time I went too. Hell, I had been before but even I had trouble finding a few holes yesterday due to how bad the signage is.

I learned to play on the old front nine. Many rounds at this course.
