How early do you need to get there for a decent spot? Are there still people around that you can pay to save a spot. Is it necessary?

Do you want to see Endymion Saturday night on St, Charles?
If so, you will need to be downtown between Canal and the former Lee Circle. That is the part of the Iris/Tucks route that is included in the Endymion route.

Honestly, sun up, 6:30 or so. If uptown, sidewalk side is easier to get a decent spot. bring a coffee and a small speaker, sit back, and enjoy the morning. If you are closer enough to Fat Harry's or Superior, enjoy a bloody Mary. Have your crew meet you around 9:30.

I assume you are going for Iris/Tucks and not Endymion.
You have to get out there pretty early because of how early those parades are. If you are just going for those and not Endymion I'd just go deep uptown

The answer is EARLY EARLY EARLY.
These are my photos on the Avenue (between Napoleon and Louisiana (neutral ground side) taken at about 6:30 in the morning a couple of years ago on Iris and Tucks Saturday:
More people than you believe will have someone out here overnight manning their spot.
Someone mentioned a good tip- if you have a small group (less than 10 or so) scope out and take sidewalk side (note mostly chairs and ladders, not so much tarps, saving spots on the sidewalk side). And see that little folding table in foreground of the the top shot? Bring something like that and some bags of stuff to put on it; chairs can be shunted aside in a second by others, but people are less likely to mess with a little table with stuff on it.
Another tip-- set up on a cross street corner; when auto traffic is cut off you can expand with chairs into the cross street itself. You can't claim the cross streets early in the morning as all the streets are still open.
One more tip-- go a little further down on the route. The early parts along Napoleon and St. Charles from Napoleon to the far side of Louisiana are filled wall to wall with suburbanites (like me) who have shiteloads of family and friends coming to a neutral ground compound. If you go a little further down-- not to MLK/Melpomene or Felicity, but between Washington/Jackson, not far from the Garden District -- you are more likely to find a spot, and it's not nearly as ratchet there as it is closer towards downtown.
