Go down to your local DMV, SS, Unemployment or Social Welfare office and see who works there. You will wonder no more. If you're brown or black they rubber stamp your application, no questions asked.

Do an internet search for how to obtain SNAP benefits in your state. Your state probably has a main portal to apply. Go through the application process, but don't hit submit. That will tell you all you need to know. I don't recall needing an ID. I think it asked me to put in my SSN as the main ID info.

If you have someone's info, you can sign up for the benefits. They send you an EBT card in the mail. You call, give a PIN to activate it, and there you go. It's a lot easier than you would assume.

When you answer the questions online, the system will probably ascertain if you are sort of sliding into needing some help, or if you're in dire straits, like being homeless, having no job, no income, etc. It will expedite things if you're in that situation. Otherwise, usually there is a follow-up phone interview or something like that.
