The derby is a fun time. If it’s warm and the sun is out, there’s a shite ton of eye candy from all the women wearing their dresses.

I’ve quit going though the last few years, too many damn people. The lines for beer and food are ungodly long.

One of the last great tracks.

Turfway and Oaklawn are about the only tracks you can depend on having full fields these days.

I bet mom would watch the kiddo and let me and manders spend the weekend in hot springs. That would be a fun little getaway

The Arkansas derby (the actual horse races) is on March 28. I know because I already have tickets

This is a separate event. The Smash event is a promotional to build up excitement for the actual derby

I went last year and it is a ton of people but I still enjoyed it. Just make sure to buy two beers or drinks when you get up there, and get back in line when you’re halfway through the 2nd one

Takes planning ahead. Or walk back into the casino and go to the high stakes room and buy drinks at that bar, never more than 5-6 people in there. It’s supposed to be for high stakes players only but they don’t give a shite

Last time I was like frick it and stick 60 bucks in a high stakes slot machine at 5 dollars a credit and hit it for 1200 bucks on the 2nd spin

Yeah the don’t care about anyone getting a beer in the high stakes bar.
I live 40 minutes from Oaklawn so I’m there a lot. Guess as I’ve gotten older my tolerance for being somewhere that’s nothing but elbows and assholes, isn’t fun anymore.

Family ownership is awesome, if you are lucky enough to know them you can have an excellent breakfast while watching the morning works.

Things you may not know about Oaklawn.

Surrounding mineral taps are different minerals and free so bring a truck load of ceramic jugs (Mountain Valley is bottled there from same springs)

Owney Madden is gone, but what a second life he lived in Hot Springs

Clinton's mom was a railbird. Say what you will but a women who follows the ponies is a rare find. Former Kentucky Governor Louie Nunn (R) had a wife named Beulah that knew the ponies better than many men thought they did.

Oklawn may not be Heaven, but a place with ponies and catfish may be danged close.

The caricatures on the walls are by Peb, a French artist, and quite famous.

Back in the day, Oaklawn and Keeneland were almost incestuious in their staff, grounds, backside, etc. So many people you met you saw at BOTH tracks.
