LACOMBE, La. — A duck hunting trip turned into a fight for survival Saturday when three men became stranded in a remote marsh after their boat drifted nearly two miles away in freezing temperatures and gale-force winds.
St. Tammany Parish Marine Division deputies braved wind, ice and bitter cold to rescue the hunters from the Big Branch Marsh near Lacombe.

LeBrun said the experience might make them think twice about going duck hunting again when there are gale warnings and freezing temperatures on the water.

Glad they're safe but hard to have sympathy for their plight given the obvious don't go weather reports for that day. I know someone who died like this, duck hunting and hypothermia, boat motor died and by himself they couldn't reach him in time.

They also endangered the deputies who rescued them.

"I'd like to say it wasn't worth it," LeBrun said. "But we got one duck and that's a lot as far as hunting public land, Big Branch this season."

Looks like they were satisfied with this hunt!

He went to Rummel.

I had my small flat boat come off the trailer once and go down a river, I ran home and got the bay boat to find it. I was way to embarrassed to get anyone else involved. I definitely would not be giving an interview on the news lol

What a dunce
Yep, I have done a bunch of dumb shite and always made sure nobody was looking. Guy thinks he’s a hero for braving the weather to kill a spoon bill or possibly a merganser.

You know conditions are bad when the sheriffs deputy has to go back and get a bigger boat! Lucky we are not reading about their bodies being recovered,

At least they were smart (or cold) enough to not try and swim for it. We lost a neighbor in high school who tried to swim for his boat in cold water.

In my 30s - 50s I did a lot of duck hunting no matter the weather…cold rain, sleet, snow, temps in single digits, thick ice, thunderstorms, etc. I look back on it and realize how stupid that was. I’m not so mad at the ducks any more.

Cold and windy is good duck hunting weather. They don’t fly as much when it’s bluebird.

Used to hunt in IL and had to dunk the decoys to get the snow off their backs and do donuts w the boat to break up the ice.

Question is how did they let the boat drift away. Couple of marsh anchors and good knots should have prevented.

Glad they could call for help.

Anchor pulled somehow, caught again when it got into lake. We always used 2 anchors and made sure they were buried. And only because we only used 1 one time and wind pushed it up on shore and tide went out. Wasn’t a fun Christmas Eve.

Yeah more people die in the water than being shot in hunting accidents.

Literally happened to a buddy 5 years ago, sheriffs office found his boat like 7-8 miles out into the lake.
