The words "depleted roster" are new to the olympic movement.

The Finland Canada women's ice hockey match has been postponed because many on the Finland team are sick with a norovirus.
Where did they catch it and who have they shared it with? And who gets to clean their rooms, etc. after they leave and their rooms are given to other athletes?

It is endemic in Italy. You can get it almost anywhere! Lake Garda

Well... the last thing you need is these girls skating up and down the ice and checking when they could have an O-ring blowout at any moment.

Last year on the Appalachian Trail it was all over the place. I had to cut my hike short one week. It was the most wiped out I’ve ever been. I violently vomited several times and then slept for two days.

It spreads from direct contact with poop or vomit molecules. It’s easy to understand why it would spread in a place with little soap or hot water like the woods, not so much a civilized area.

Wut? You ever watch anyone in a public restroom? I dare you to, you'll be sick. I'd say easily 50% of the people just walk out. It's disgusting.

As the father of two small children, I assure you it’s the children. You can be diligent about making them wash their hands and you can still get norovirus every year.

Norovirus is like your regular stomach bug but on steroids. And it's highly contagious. It lives on surfaces for weeks if not treated. You can get it from eating food prepared by someone with the virus (this is a pretty common transmission point and people oftentimes mistake it with food poisoning). You can get it from basically sharing the same air as someone who vomited (particles will carry in the air).

Plenty of "civilized" places have Norovirus that spreads. It's common here in the US. It usually kicks up when school gets back in session for the year.

We were in Rome for New Year's 2025 with our High School Marching Band. Almost everyone that went (except me, oddly) came down with either Norovirus or Covid. It was insane.

We had an outbreak at my kids first week-long scout camp. A hundred or more kids pooping and puking at the infirmary. To make it worse we only had pit toilets. It was grueling for those that caught it. National now uses that experience in their yearly training. I think I got 27k steps that day in all the excitement.

It was my favorite day of camp.
