Brian Kelly’s hands-off approach cost LSU

Five-star receiver Tristen Keys made an early declaration for LSU in March following a string of visits to contenders. But Brian Kelly‘s passive role in Keys’ recruitment was in stark contrast to the substantial outreach from Mario Cristobal, Mike Elko and Josh Heupel that spring. When Kelly again made minimal effort during Key’s official visit in June, the five-star receiver told other recruits he was leaning toward flipping away from the Tigers. He eventually flipped to Tennessee in August. – Spiegelman

LSU recruits itself off its brand, as Kiffin said earlier. But you still have to put in the work. Kelly thought he could play golf and it all come together.

Kelly clearly took advantage of the situation.

That was the singular worst aspect about Kelly IMO. He was way too hands off and maybe just disinterested.

The rumors were that he took no part in prospect camps on campus either. When guys committed, they would shout out position coaches but never mentioned him.

This alone should have been enough cause to fire him and not have to pay him the buyout. Dude was stealing alot money from LSU and putting in minimal work.

I really thought LSU could pretty much 8-4, 9-3 itself no matter the coach but I never thought we would hire someone that wouldn't even try.

Sure I get it and it’s valid that BK didn’t recruit hard enough. But Keys pretty much said he’s not really committed right after he “committed”. His recruitment was never once closed and no one actually felt he was going to stick anyway.

It would be interesting to know just how many players BK's approach cost LSU. Now we as fans know one of the big reasons why highly rated players committed early and eventually decommited.

One of the biggest differences between BK and LK is that we should see LSU trend upward with players, with (hopefully far) fewer negative surprises during the recruiting process.

Kelly must’ve thought the same thing.
“If cartoon characters like Les and O can win the Natty, so should I.”

LSU is elite, but you’ve still gotta put in the work to be better than 8-4, 9-3.
