Ignore the groundhog, Lucy the Lobster says winter is over

Lucy the Lobster has predicted an early spring after failing to see her shadow Monday morning.

Lucy made her 8th annual prediction in Barrington, N.S., which is considered the lobster capital of Canada.

The location for the event changed this year from the Cape Sable Island Causeway to outside of Capt. Kat’s Lobster Shack, due to the nor’easter that brought heavy snow and high winds to the province Sunday night.

“Lucy didn’t see her shadow this morning,” Suzy Atwood with the Municipality of Barington told “Your Morning’s” Anne-Marie Mediwake Monday morning. “It may have had a little bit to do with the nor’easter that we had come through our region, but we’re pretty excited for an early spring.”

The 10-pound crustacean wore a bright yellow sou’wester hat for the occasion.


“It actually is made for a pet, for a cat, but it fits Lucy perfectly,” said Atwood.

Lucy’s prediction is the first event to kick off the Nova Scotia Lobster Crawl festival, which runs from Feb. 1-28 on Nova Scotia’s South Shore.

As for what’s next for Lucy, Atwood says she has her eye on late-night TV.

“Who knows where she will go,” she said. “We’re hoping maybe Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel. We’re pretty happy to be here.”

Lucy is also the star of her own children’s book, “Lucy the Lob’Star.”
