Way too late Sekiro first playthrough thread

Started playing FromSoft games back in 2020 or so when Demon's Souls remake came out on PS5. Since then I did Elden Ring (platinum), Dk Souls 1-3, Bloodborne (never finished but got pretty far...need to pick that back up), and then several more Elden Ring runs.
In the midst of that, I tried Sekiro 2-3 times and never could get going with it. In each attempt, I'd clear the tutorial, initiate the first "bonfire", and never make it to the second bonfire
Trying to play this while in a pretty substantial standard souls run of gaming...I just could never wrap my head around the differences in gameplay.
I haven't played a souls game in quite a while now, so I decided to pick this up again and have finally gotten past the mental hurdles of that opening area. I'm still not very far, as I've run into this large snake in a cave that I haven't figured out what to do with yet, but I've at least progressed through a few little mini field bosses (assuming that's what they were...they've taken 2 death blows to take down).
Based on FightinCowboy's 15 hour or so 100% walkthrough, I'm assuming this should be a pretty manageable game to take on in terms of gameplay time, although with my lack of parrying skills I could probably easily double that time.

I started to play my first souls games around the same time as you. Bloodborne first and then Demon's souls. Sekiro came next and then elden ring. Finally beat dark souls 1 sometime last year.
All that being said...never parried in any of these games besides Sekiro so you need to embrace that.

Brother, if you come in shite at parrying and manage to beat the game in 30 hours, I’ll be more than a little impressed. This entire game is parrying. Frankly, it has more in common with rhythm games than it does any Souls game you’ve played. The first time I played Sekiro, I bounced off of it hard, just because I didn’t like how different it was.
And I’m really, really good at parrying

It's an amazing game and will click for you after 5-6 hours. There is a boss that you cannot beat without understanding the game's mechanics to a competent degree. This boss is what really made things click for me. There's a certain flow to the combat/parrying that you have to get, and once you do, it's a sublime feeling.
Incredible game

I'm getting there quickly. I never bothered with parries in previous games but I did start practicing it more at one point when trying to beat Gwyn.

The biggest difference between Sekiro combat and standard Souls combat is that the former rewards aggression while the latter sadistically punishes you for it. The standard Souls formula is to reward patience. Sekiro doesn't give a shite about your patience. Combat is a brutal dance, and hesitation is defeat. You should never be "waiting"; you should either be attacking or parrying, essentially at all times. Once you fully embrace that, the game clicks.

Yea, it seems you can’t try and whittle down an enemy’s health bar over time…you have to go at them hard

With a couple of exceptions, breaking posture is vastly, vastly more important than whittling down the health of the boss. The posture bar of the boss slowly/quickly (depending on the boss) depletes every second you aren't attacking or parrying. If you hesitate, you can't break the posture of the boss. If you can't break the posture of the boss, you die.

Absolutely. I found Sekiro significantly more challenging than Souls games because the combat asks way more of you. Souls games you can be patient in boss fights and play defensive and whittle them down gradually. Sekiro you have to attack and not let up. . The single butt poke and run away to regroup tactics doens't work. You have to chain together a long sequences of successful attacks and parries to take things down.
To me Sekiro is actually the 2nd best game FromSoftware has ever made IMO, just a tiny hair above Bloodborne, and only behind Dark Souls 1 obv.

I think I'm off and running now, finally. Cleared the Burning Bull this morning using the firecrackers. Got an axe, flame thrower, and a raven ability (which I haven't used yet).

for me right now, the biggest challenge is keeping all of the various skills in mind and using them at the appropriate time. After beating the bull I've circled back to what appears to be the starting/tutorial area by the building with the hold in the wall (where you first meet the heir). The guard in front of that building destroyed me and I realized that there was a swipe counter I should have used. That'll take some getting used to as opposed to the standard souls games where the weapons dictate move sets.

Was away on vacation for a week and picked it back up tonight. Finally got through the drunk ogre guy and got to Lady Butterfly. Once I realized that the shuriken would knock her out of the air I was able to get through it in 6-8 deaths. I’m getting better at identifying which prosthetics to use against bosses and some of the tougher enemies. Still can’t seem to beat this spear enemy guarding the bldg where the heir was hiding in the tutorial though lol

It’s my favorite From game.
This is something I almost never hear from anyone else but it’s got imo at least the single best combat ever. Nothing else has ever come in the universe of it at simulating the feeling of a duel.
It isn’t that amazing when it isn’t one on one though but that doesn’t happen too much tbh
I also think it’s hilarious it’s their only game with difficulty options where you start on easy and have the choice to ring the demon bell and/or give Kuro back his charm which makes the game ridiculously difficult and it took me insane time with it before I got good enough to be able to finish it with both of those modifications added on
So yeah, I consider myself an expert no doubt on this one from game rofl. If you need anything let me know. As far as the spear mini boss in your post you can sneak up behind him with the sugar that makes you stealth for one death blow I think. Only other thing is to mikuri counter him into the dirt

Let me rephrase…when I posted earlier about having trouble with the seven spears dude it was because at the time I was still struggling with my reflexes in regards to mikuri versus jump off the head counters. I’d recognize the counter correctly but still do the opposite. I’ve long since conquered that and defeated him. Beat both Guardian Ape fights and beat the mini boss up in the Ashina Castle Dojo (after it was taken over by some other clan of dudes) and I’m heading back to the rooftop again. Kinda annoying having to go back through the castle to re-activate the idols but kinda cool at the same time. Neat way to change the environment. Making good progress and having a blast

If you really love it are you familiar with wha I was speaking about above the demon bell and returning kuros charm to him? The latter can only be done on new game plus right when you climb into his window at the beginning. The demon bell can be rung at any time.
The bell makes enemies more difficult but for better drops, returning the charm means you take chip health damage any time you block or don’t do a perfect deflection, and yes there are deflections and perfect deflections lol even though they are in practice for most players the same. It makes the game ridiculously hard and it’s why I said you start on easy mode.
What prosthetics are you using? I find most players don’t experiment much with some of the more wilder ones like the mist raven etc but it can be legit the best one if you practice it a lot. The umbrella is by far the most op though.
So is guardian ape the only one of the three areas you’ve gone to and got the item needed by completing it? Have you been the village or the temple?

I’m not too interested in making it harder. It’s more than enough challenge for me and I’m fine with it.
For prosthetics I typically run around with the spear, axe, and shuriken, but switch to the flame thrower, firecrackers, and umbrella for boss fights. I used the poison blade when I first got it but wasn’t making too much progress with it and gave it up.

The poison blade is a lot like the mist raven. It takes a lot of practice, not as much, to learn how to work it into your combos seamlessly.
It’s not really meant to be used like the axe or spear but more as an extension or middle of your combos. It is extremely powerful against certain types of enemies though but idk if you have been there yet.
What is your next boss or location? Many people consider the final boss, as long as you don’t do the evil ending, one the hardest in gaming. I will be interested to see if you agree

Like I said, I’m up in the dojo after the invasion of the castle. Just beat the mini boss there…Jinsuke I think. Turned it off for the night but assuming there’s a boss up at the top again where I fought Genichiro the first time for real.

Yes there will be, it’s where you can choose to end the game the early with the evil ending. I highly recommend doing this but not on your first run lol
