Apparently he was pretty gross too, which just makes it all the more funny.

He would strike up conversations with teammates in the shower and covertly piss on their leg.

The locker room would have a bin of clean socks. Maddux would take one of the clean socks and wipe his arse with it and throw it back in the bin.

If I remember correctly, I think in the last couple years of Maddux career in Atlanta, Javy Lopez wasn’t catching a lot of his games. It would basically be Javy’s day off every 5th game and the backup catcher would work Greg’s games.

Edit: Henry Blanco was the backup catcher in 2002 and 2003.

I have Gwynn’s signed helmet that he wore when he got hit #2,977. He had a little head. I think it is 7 1/4”.

Agree. He and Ichiro are probably the 2 best pure contact hitters in my 48 years.

Eddie is the main one, but there were others over his time with the Braves, including the aforementioned Henry Blanco, like Damon Berryhill and Charlie O’Brien. Probably more that escape me right now.

Actually heard Maddux tell the story of why the backup catcher caught him. He didn’t want to switch catchers randomly so Javy could have a day off, so Bobby and Leo agreed to have the backup so Javy got regular rest. If you recall, Javy was his playoff catcher.

He told me that story personally on the golf course.
