Other than Facebook, are there any decent options for buying/selling dirt bikes?

Seems like all the pages I’ve found are older websites that aren’t in service anymore. Is everyone just using social media to sell their stuff these days?

Gonna be looking for a CR230F (or something comparable) here pretty soon and they’re honestly pretty hard to find

I check Cycletrader.com every so often looking for deals. I ride a dualsport BMW but it is too big for dirt. Gravel roads scare me enough....wink..grin.

Usedbikesdirect.com. Don’t have any experience with them but drive by their facility in Houston all the time. Might be worth a look. I think they have a location in Baton Rouge as well.

As much as a pain marketplace can be, it might be your best bet to look. Increase your search radius. The current model is a 300 actually but the previous models were 250, then 230. Yamaha made a 230 as well. I believe Kawasaki did too but you don’t see them much.

I know its not what you're asking but is the bike going to be for yourself or someone else like your wife or young kid so they can tag along. I'm asking because a the CR230F is going to get boring really quickly if for yourself and you want to do more than just cruise around a field.

CR230F

had a CRF230 for my wife - it's not that they're hard to find because there's a lot of them out there, it's that when they DO come on the market they move FAST.

The one I bought her was acquired before it was officially for sale and it was from someone I knew at a dealership; they'd taken it in trade but hadn't even gone through it yet. I got first crack after the shop cleared it. When we eventually sold it, I put a slightly higher than normal price on with room to haggle - sold within 30 minutes of listing it and STILL had people responding saying they'd gladly pay way over asking price if it hadn't left garage yet.

ETA: tend to agree w/ Yami though, it's a great bike for what it is - but what do you want it for?

I want it because I’m new to dirt bikes. I mean, I know how to ride, but I’ve never had my own. Always been a four wheeler guy. My son is starting to ride a lot and I’d like to be able to ride with him.

A buddy turned me on to the 230F. I’m 6’2 225 lbs, and his CR125F (pretty sure that’s what it was) seemed a little too small for me so he recommended the 230. Like yall said, I know there are newer editions with more CCs.. if yall have recommendations I’d be willing to listen - I know Yamaha makes the TTRs, but I’m not too keen on those

Don’t call me a fig or anything but I’m contemplating the ETM RTR Alpha XL as well. It’s an electric dirtbike. My son has the LITE, and honestly, it’s a badass machine. They’re a ton of fun to ride. My only concern is longevity. I know if I buy a Honda, it’ll last forever. These e-bikes?? Not so sure

Good answer, thanks.

So even though you know HOW to ride you're looking for a "learner bike" to not only learn to be a better rider offroad with your son, but also gain the experience of owning/care/maintenance for a bike - yes? And for that, something liked the CRF is hard to argue against because you can frankly just about put gas, oil, tires, and filters on it and just ride ride ride. It's small and light enough that you can literally toss it around on trail yet it's not likely to bite you in the arse when (not if) you pick a bad line or get in over your head. And if you later decide that you want to move up with more miles under your belt, you can probably flip it for about what you paid for it and move on.

I respect that approach and it's usually my approach as well - in contrast to my riding buddy went out and bought the flashiest brand new high end trail bike he could find, rode it a while, decided it wasn't right, lost his arse selling it, and repeated the processes 5 or 6 times before settling on his "right bike".

CRF fits this role well but a couple thoughts:

as I said, they're hard to find because when they do come on market they disappear FAST because they're so sought after for all the reasons above and they're practically indestructible.

You're 6'2", 225# ... I'm 6'1" and 180# and while my wife's CRF was a lot of fun, it was a bit cramped and under-powered for me, especially at high elevations of our home in Colorado. The suspension is also not great but fits the role bike was made for. For her at 5'6" and considerably lighter it was just right though.

I'm not saying don't look for a CRF but as someone who's ridden offroad for over 50 years and spent a lot of time chasing the "unicorn" bike that does everything well and is reliable and easy to work on when it does need something .... I would point you to the KLX300. You're not as likely to outgrow it as quickly - maybe never - they're damn fine bikes with better power, suspension, and ergos right out of the box. And being newER, they're easy to find at good prices if you're patient.

I would resist the temptation to jump immediately into a 400-class bike based on what you're saying and they can hurt you if you get in over your head. But if you do I had a WR450 for a while that was stone cold reliable and would go anywhere I ever asked it to in Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. My one and only complaint was that it would beat the crap out of you on the pavement and I need something that can connect trail heads in neighboring mountain towns. The Honda 450 is a great bike too but I have an admitted bias against Honda which I acknowledge is for no good reason.

This is also the reason that I personally wouldn't have an e-dirtbike. They're a blast to ride, but you can't just drop off the trail into the nearest town to top off the tank and get back out there. If your riding is more a couple hours in the woods nearby, then it might work for you.

jeez I didn't mean to write that much but I love talking bikes - get back with any additional questions.

Correct!

This is true. From what I’ve been able to tell, the 230 is rare and the ones I’ve found aren’t close to New Orleans

Which brings up a question I have.. when looking into bikes, does location matter that much? What I mean is, are dirt bikes shipped a lot? If I found one I liked in North Carolina for example, is shipping it a realistic option? I understand the risks of buying a bike without physically seeing it and testing it, just weighing my potential options

I’m interested… do you think a KLX230R would be too small for me?

I’m not 100% sold on the CRF230, I understand what you’re saying about potentially outgrowing it quick.. I wouldn’t mind giving the 250 or even the 300 a shot. I’m a Honda guy. My Rancher lasted my dad and I 18 years and was still running perfect when we gave it away to a family friend. I’ve worked on a couple four stroke Honda dirt bikes in the past and they were just so simple. I guess I’m sort of a Honda guy but I’m not completely sold out to the brand

I’m definitely going to stay away from this. I’d be more likely to go with an electric dirtbike than something with that much power.. my son just got an ETM RTR Lite. If you’re not familiar with them, take a quick look. They’re a blast to ride. They just released their Alpha XL model which is a bigger motor with more power, bigger tires, etc…. Pretty awesome in my opinion but honestly I’m leaning more towards a gas powered machine

If you are willing to branch out a little the Suzuki DR series is bulletproof. Same design for like 30 years. Lots of parts. Can be had for cheaper than a Honda. Very comfortable.

A DRZ 400 is my dream bike. They are very strong. Footpegs and handlebar fit well. Im 6'4" and 240. Not on road i could go smaller than the 400 but id like to eventually get into adventure riding one day and will need to support more cargo.

So if I’m just a tad smaller than you, and relatively new, which Suzuki should I look in to? I feel like the 400 you mentioned might be too much
