if you ever have a chance to go to the marianas, go. saipan, guam, and tinian are amazing to visit. still have remnants from the campaign all over the place on saipan and tinian. guam has stuff too, but most of it is on anderson which you cant get to

If they are anything like Iwo Jima, the warnings to not pick up anything you see in the sand are there for a reason! I presume they're all more cleaned up than Iwo was in the 80s, of course.

How’d you put together that trip?

been there a few times too, was a powerful place. want to say a Japanese marine got killed there a few years back by wandering off and falling in a crevasse or something

without getting into too many details, i used to work for a place that spent a lot of time leading tours on these islands and i was frequently a guide

Hell, guide me. I’ve always wanted to do a Pacific WWII tour.

Micronesian Divers Association is a good dive shop and travel arranger at Guam.
Axe Murderer Tours was the major dive operator on Saipan.
Both have some great shore dive opportunities while Guam has better boat dives.
United and Delta were the main US airlines.
It is amazing to see Sherman tanks in the surf off Saipan.

My dad was there. USS Enterprise.

It was an absolute slaughter of an air battle between highly experienced airmen on one side against novice pilots who could hardly land on a carrier and had no business flying.
Also, scratch three flattops with the Taiho, Shokaku, and Hiyo gone.

Jefferson Joseph DeBlanc became an ace in one day in the Pacific in 1943 and won the medal of honor.
He eventually had to bail out and was rescued by islanders who traded him for a 10 lb soowak (cajun for sack) of rice.
I listened to him in a documentary, this guy was comedy central. Just layin on that cajun accent.....
I' s flying and come on em, thick as mosquitoes, well come get some then. I shot down two, Im looking around for my squad, wells if ya aint gon heep, then mark the spot cause im goin down. Just then I look down at my watch and ping, bullet knocked it off my arm.
Got me a couple more then I says Jeffrey ole boy ya gots no bullets, ya gots no fuel and this ole gal is shot to hell, you bess git out.
Some natives picked me up and traded me for a 10 lb sooowak o rice. Thats right. A man can go his whole life and not know what he is worth. I know I's worth 10 lbs o rice.
What a hoot.....and a genuine hero.

I finally got around to watching The Pacific series. Didn’t know I drive by Eugene Sledge’s childhood home on a daily basis.
Those Pacific marines were as tough as a woodpecker’s lips. Amazing what they endured.
