Wow, what an amazing decline of a once proud program.

@colecubelic
Nebraska has now lost 30 straight games to AP-ranked opponents.
—
That has to be some type of record right? And one would think they could luck into a ranked win. I recall in the last 5 or so years where they were ahead of several ranked teams in the 4th qtr and lost - each one in devastating fashion.
Rhule got an extension, mainly to keep him from Penn State they say. Can he change the culture?
Really amazing and with NIL and unlimited transfers one would think they could turn it around.
Their all time record is W896 - L411 - T38.
43 Conf championships
5 National Titles
27-28 Bowl record
3 Heisman winners
Pretty accomplished school and it would be great if they could climb back on top.

What firing Frank Solich and Bo Pelini does to a program

Nebraska should be looking to copy what Indiana did. If Indiana can do it, so can Nebraska

The record is apparently Rutgers that has lost 43 straight games to ranked opponents.
Nebraska's last win against a ranked team was in 2016.
Rutgers last win against a ranked team was in 2009.

Yup. Rhule is 5-7 / 7-6 / 7-6 in his 3 years. Year 4 will be huge for the program. The last time they won more than 7 games was 2016 at 9-4. Was also their last ranked win beating #22 Oregon early in season.

Pelini records:
2008: 9-4
2009: 10-4
2010: 10-4
2011: 9-4
2012: 10-4
2013: 9-4
2014: 9-3 (fired prior to bowl game)
Since then they’ve had 1 season at 9-4 (2016) and the next best is Rhule at 7-6 last 2 seasons.

Need better line play and physicality. Line play killed us all year.

Cant get the skilled players from Texas, Florida, California, and Louisiana. Even the big white dudes wearing overalls on the offensive line dont want to go there. Its all about recruiting. Stopped after Solich.

The move to the big ten has been quite unkind to them. They thought they would roll in and dominate, they didn’t, fired a great fit for their program who won 70% of their games after he got them to a NYD bowl, and have struggled mightily since.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Some 46 hours before Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst stepped out from behind the curtain of silence and explained his decision on Sunday to fire Bo Pelini as coach, the Huskers celebrated an emotional overtime victory at Iowa.
It marked the second-largest comeback in school history. Players and coaches rejoiced.
The athletic director's clear message at the end of this holiday weekend? Not good enough.
Credit Eichorst, in his second year at Nebraska, for removing the emotion of the regular-season-ending victory from his decision on Pelini. Credit him for recognizing that, if Nebraska expects to reach its desired position in the Big Ten and beyond, it's not about beating Iowa.
"In the final analysis," he said, "I had to evaluate where Iowa was."

Since that day, Nebraska is 1-10 v. Iowa, they have hired 4 coaches, have beat 1 ranked team, and played in 4 bowls reached by these coaches chosen to establish their dominance.

Rhule has recruited well but his problem has been assistant hires. And honestly I think the Raiolas kept the program down with how we had to keep Donovan Raiola around to coach the OL which was horrific, and I think Holgerson was forced to call plays that made Dylan look good.
Curious to see how next season unfolds. If its a disaster Rhule might be on the hot seat.

The decline started way before him with UNL chancellor Harvey Pearlman who put Steve Pederson in as AD and he fired Solich and hired Callahan. Pearlman also got us that little ginger frick Eichorst after he pushed Tom Osborne out as AD after Pederson was fired after the Callahan debacle.

2008: 9-4
2009: 10-4
2010: 10-4
2011: 9-4
2012: 10-4

If you watched any of Nebraska during that time you'd see they didn't consistently compete with the upper tier teams.
Like Richt at Georgia who had a really good record but got to another level with Kirby.
Nebraska's problem is that they just haven't hit a homerun on their coach

Harvey Pearlman is a little pencil necked nerd who hates sports. IMO hes the one who killed Nebraska football. He hated the athletic program

On July 16, 2000 Perlman became the Interim Chancellor of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. On April 1, 2001 Perlman was named the nineteenth Chancellor of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.[3] Perlman stepped down in 2016 and returned to a teaching role at the University of Nebraska College of Law.[4]

I would say it stopped when they moved to B10. Their recruiting region changed. Lots of TX players didn't want games far away from home. In B12 most of the games were drivable (if parents from TX). Not so much in B10.
But now with NIL, money is most important mostly. If they can pay then they’ll get players in key positions. Choosing wisely will be key.

Recruiting was falling off hard under Solich, once Osborne's recruits graduated the decline began. Recruiting was the best post Osborne under Callahan, it's unfortunate he couldn't find a defensive coordinator since the trajectory of the program could have been completely different.

Fair assessment. They weren't making money in the B12.
Posted on 1/1/26 at 11:25 am to ChestRockwell
An interesting question. Let’s say Nebraska never moved to B10. The OU/NE rivalry was only second to OU/TX. Lets say Nebraska was a contender those years in B12 had they stayed.
Would SEC have offered them to get OU/TX? Would SEC have still offered only OU/TX and made OU decide to break up with Nebraska?
Doesn’t matter now but had Nebraska stayed it would have been interesting what happened in that scenario.

lol. They clearly have big time issues attracting and developing any talent. Since firing Pelini, they recruited and had zero consensus all Americans from Lavonte David in 2011. They’re not failing to hit home runs with their hires, they’re striking out in historic fashion. They don’t get to bowl games as often as they stay home, and they never have nationally elite players anywhere.

Interesting. The Nebraska/Colorado game was pretty good when the Buffs started to get good back in late 80's.

I thought Emmett Johnson would've been an All-American but I guess not.
