I wonder if the starter had not gotten hurt if Chambliss would have gotten a fair shot to play? I'm not sure it's an easy answer.

The story was that Lane's assistants were watching tape of all QB's in the portal to see who might be of interest to them or if there were any hidden gems. I think it was Weis who went to Kiffin with a "you gotta see this guy" and Kiffin told him to get Chambliss on a plane for a visit ASAP.
It's the kind of organizational detail that helps Kiffin do well in the portal. Don't leave any turn unstoned.

I suspect this is close to the case. Chambliss was something of a known quantity after Ferris State won the D II Championship last year. I watched a tape of him, nothing he did should have surprised people.
