totally fine, but its closer to binge-watching netflix than to actual learning. the flex tells on itself

Eh, I dont hate on women for reading smut if it gets them revved up for their husband/boyfriend. Its better than scrolling tiktok or watching porn. Bragging about it like you read the top 100 English language novel list is a bit much though.

No enrichment or learning or anything of value
That’s all just smut from tik tok
I’m not saying read all history books but damn.. that’s a bunch of just junk literature .

I’m not sure what to say … I read a lot of romance (look at my 2025 reading challenge list) but I do not list what I read for work but I read a ton of stuff - articles, research studies, excerpts from books - so ‘my’ reading time is for entertainment purposes
So I don’t necessarily agree with Twitter guy’s assumption of:
My inner librarian never scolds anyone for reading anything because this may lead her to reading ‘better’ things. And who are we to judge

Someone is reading instead of staring at a screen, and you losers bitch about it.

I don’t know anyone who reads just to learn and I’m unsure why this woman is being held to that standard.
It’s also worth noting that while a lot of it pictured here is romantasy it’s not the full 120 allotment that she’s read.
And no, it’s not like binge watching Netflix. Your brain is still processing and interpreting text. So it’s actively “working” while reading, even smut. Building vocabulary, utilizing cognitive processing, etc. And it’s less time spent online or on a screen which we know is detrimental to our brains.
In a world where there are young people who struggle to read a full book for a college course, let them read. I promise we’re better as a society for it.

Well and I have no problem admitting some of it isn’t very good and I’m sure some is AI slop. But reading is reading.
And I’m unsure why it’s such an issue (Twitter/X has been dragging this poor girl) when I know men who read a ton of manga, comics, and high fantasy with some pretty adult themes.

Someone in here suggested Dungeon Crawler Carl last year and it got me into big litrpg kick. I have read so many crappy books this year. Almost nothing but trash. So I'm not going to look down on this woman.

Here’s the thing. Reading for pleasure, even when it’s “trash” by literature standard, is still beneficial for your cognitive functioning and mental health. And it’s a hell of a lot better than doomscrolling.
Policing and shaming the content that people are reading when we’ve all read multiple articles on how little people are collectively reading seems redundant.

Who gives a frick. At least she’s reading. Why does it matter what she’s read or that she’s proud of it. I just picture Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons being the ones tearing her down.

It’s like celebrating because you only eat junk food.
It would be funny. Same applies here
Those books are the equivalent of eating nothing but cotton candy

I read mystery novels. Who cares what someone else reads. It’s healthier for the brain than staring at a screen.

IDK man, I read the Fourth Wing books at my wife's request and felt like I was big smart afterwards.

The brain doesn't recognize the difference in processing when reading "smut" or a classic when you compare it to scrolling on the internet. It's still beneficial cognitive processing. That's the larger point.
Lots of people would argue that consuming manga or some high fantasy is the same as what you're saying. Hell, a ton of folks brag about reading the ASOIAF series and it includes multiple instances of incest and one in which there are siblings who frick at the wake of their father. Where's the outrage over that content?
100% chance you're the same person who complains that people don't read enough while also complaining that someone is reading, just content that you don't prefer.

This comment does much more "telling" on this arse than than someone's reading list does. Let people read what they want. JFC. Who cares if they are reading primarily to be entertained?
The most popular thread here is about Sci-Fi/Fantasy, genres historically considered to be escapist garbage.
I disagree with that designation, and I think anyone who claims those, or romance or mystery or any other genre of literature, have no value is an elitist idiot.

TIL we shouldn’t laugh at people for bragging about their porn addiction

There is different types of reading, the same as there is different types of screen watching. Some types of screen watching is better than some types of reading.
Watching something of substance that’s educational on a screen is better than reading smut.
The girl in the OP would be better served watching an educational screen than reading porn. How this is an argument amazes me
