For those asking about what’s going on with Les Miles’ health / memory

I’ll start by saying that personally it saddens me to see anyone have to go through any of this. Les’ tenure didn’t end well, but he did all he could to win while here, so I’ll give him his respect and well wishes. With that said, I’ve seen many ask about his health and if there were any details on it. I do remember back a few years ago that there were a couple of articles addressing “his memory” issues at Kansas and staff members questioning why he was hired. The deposition also revealed that Kansas had filmed top administrators to chronicle the hiring process of Miles — before Beaty had been fired — for an ESPN+ series. Additionally, Long made remarks about Miles’ “dementia” that he explained away by saying that he was simply referring to negative recruiting against Kansas under Miles’ watch.

But there were early signs that Miles lacked the expertise to resurrect a downtrodden program. One former employee described a scene from November 2019, late in Miles’ debut season, in which the head coach insisted on watching senior highlight film of committed recruits who were set to sign with Kansas the following month. Unimpressed with some of the play he saw on tape, Miles, amid a 3-9 campaign, pushed assistants for further evaluations of multiple recruits at camps. This caused confusion because the recruits in question had already pledged to the Jayhawks and camps only take place in the spring and summer.
“No one has any fricking clue what he’s talking about,” the former employee said. “I couldn’t get out fast enough.”


Miles had tried to get involved in Cincinnati’s coaching search after the 2016 season, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. He interviewed with Purdue and Houston during that same cycle, with the latter interview being described by a person involved with the Cougars’ search as one of the worst he had ever seen.


Miles’ time at Kansas only added to internal frustration over why Long hired the then-65-year-old coach when no one else seemingly would. Miles would regularly repeat himself in meetings, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation, leading to eye rolls throughout the room.
“It was so apparent to anyone who ever had a conversation with Les that the guy should not be doing this,” the earlier former employee said. “That’s what pissed me off the most. That’s what made me mad: that Jeff Long would put Kansas football in that situation.”
