Potentially some great SWAG - players get an assortment of Kinder dry rubs and perhaps a Green Egg or Traeger?

Wow that's crazy. I'm sure the team will love some dry rubs. And if they do get grills I'd be on the lookout for some good deals on FB Marketplace because half the team is going to instantly resale those

Um. No. There is a $550 cap on swag.

Also, because of Rev share, the “gifts” are now considered taxable since the players all make over the threshold to file a return.

Swag is one of the worst words in the kids’ lexicon these days.

Reminds me of when Miami was playing UNC and a fat bald guy behind Carolina’s bench had a hand made poster that said,

“Da U got dat swag”

You are confusing swag with swagger. Swag has been used since the 60s to mean free gifts.

Swagger has been used since the early 2000s. (So 20+ years ago). So I guess by “kids lexicon” you mean 30 and 40 year olds who have been using this term for decades?

Assuming tax principles do not factor in sarcasm.

They do.

quote:

While there’s a belief that individual gifts under $600 aren’t taxable, that’s not the case. “The general rule is that any gift is a taxable gift,” the IRS states on its website. There are some notable exceptions: College tuition covered by an athletic scholarship isn’t taxable. For everything else, including all that Armed Forces Bowl swag, Uncle Sam wants his share.

Still, it’s not like the bowl or sponsors are going to issue players a 1099, a form self-employed individuals receive from businesses that paid them for services during the year. So they can get away with not disclosing it on their taxes, right?

This is purely a player problem; the bowl, school and sponsors have no responsibility to hold athletes’ hands through the process. Under NIL, players are considered self-employed individuals who are responsible for reporting all their income and paying taxes on it, whether or not they receive a 1099. The IRS’ annual $18,000 gift exclusion doesn’t apply. That’s for cash gifts from one individual to another, like a parent to a child.

So bowl “Swag” has been used for less time. Thst would not put it in the adult lexicon either.
