It’s not that far from plausible. Both sides rely on cell towers for drone communication. Not that unbelievable that they can take over control of a few as the come in.

I wonder if they are controlled much after they take off. They seem like they are more likely told when launched, follow this flight path and crash at this point.
Like you said, they are pretty dumb. Maybe, they have some basic image recognition for hitting buildings or possibly triangulate off various radio towers.
If they are using Ukrainian radio towers, the Ukrainians might could confuse them by making the towers miss identify or maybe jamming towers they don't control?
