Samsung halting SATA SSD production?

SATA SSDs are essentially legacy hardware and are going the way of the dodo. With the rise of the PCIe NVME drive, it's kind of the unwanted middle child between NVME and large capacity HDD. Not that they don't have niche uses, but I could see companies starting to move away from them.

There's a famous saying that projects will always grow to consume all resources allocated to them.
As storage space and memory capacities exploded the past 20 years, developers just stopped caring about even considering those things when the decades before they were of monumental concern in every single decision made.

We will be paying prices to stream everything from data centers

It blew my mind years ago watching youtube videos about NES game development and hearing people talk about full blown shouting matches on the dev team about which different sprites needed an extra frame of unique animation to make the movement make sense versus another, because they didn't have enough memory for two more unique frames

I think all of this is true Josh, but is there any indication that NVMe drives are expected to last anywhere near as long as SSDs? I mean, I would trust Samsung SSDs in a NAS or server with little question (if RAIDed). I know NVMe is mature now, but it is more of a performance product without that reliability reputation (of course, that was SSD when launched versus HDD).
I agree that cost per TB is too close between SSD and NVMe to be competitive and HDD is going to win for bulk. True middle child situation.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m not aware of any significant difference in reliability. At its core, an NVME drive is still an SSD. What’s getting jettisoned is the SATA connectivity.

Good. Two less cables I need to worry about in a build.

Yup. And for anyone running an older system that needs the SATA connectivity, NVME to SATA enclosures are dirt cheap. This is a single stick model: LINK

That is cheap, but is only compatible with SATA Nvme drives, or B-key. This will not put a M-key PCIE NVME M.2 drive and work using SATA connectors. I have yet to find one of those.

If they disappear, ah well.
