How bad is it? Thinking of going visit some friends for NYE. It’s a 3 hour direct flight, so wouldn’t have do deal with connecting flights.

What time of day? I flew out last year day after Christmas and ATL was busy but not chaotic. Generally I'd suggest the first flight out of the day just to beat the chaos

I mean if you have a direct flight I don't really see what the issue would be I'm sure MSY won't be that bad

Flying during the Christmas holidays is always busy, but it's not nearly as bad as Thanksgiving. People going home after Christmas will be spread out from 12/26 to January 1st or 2nd. I'd be more worried about how busy NYC will be than the airlines. Get to Rockefeller Center at 6-7 AM to see the tree without the crowds.
