Only 12 survivors are still alive.

It was a totally different world back then. Even present-and-future Hollywood stars like Jimmy Stewart and Charles Bronson put their careers on hold to go fight for America. Female stars like Ava Gardner worked tirelessly to both raise money and perform in USO shows.

You are a day early, Pearl attack happened on the 7th, but
United States didn't declare war until the 8th, one hour after FDR's speech.

One of those strange life overlaps. My Uncle Randy happened to be touring DC that day and managed to get one of the few seats in the public gallery to witness the speech in person. Meanwhile, just one day earlier, his twin brother, Loren, second from the left in the photo receiving the Silver Star, had been in the thick of the attack at Hickam Field.

With confidence in our armed forces; with the unbounding determination of our people; we will gain the inevitable triumph, so help us God.
Badass.

But it was unanimous when the US declared war on Romania, which was the last time the United States declared war.

This is my first for-sure memory = recalling where I was and the surroundings.
I have in the past said the 'bombing of Pearl Harbor" as my first memory, but have since realized it was the fact the family was sitting around the radio while someone talked.
I had just turned 3 yrs old in October - and had no idea what was happening. I just knew my mother was crying, my dad and older brother were mad as hell & wanting to 'fight someone.'
I was afraid that whatever it was may have been my fault. I hid in the back corner of the room while all the tumult played itself out.
No other event could have produced all that in that timeframe.

Miss Rankin abstained on that vote after the veritable shitstorm resulting from her "no" vote on Japan.
Montana learned their lesson though... wiki says that was the last time they voted a woman into congress.
