make sure its unloaded
SIAP, didn't see it if it was. Always make sure its unloaded. Had to suck for his hunting partner.

the two were walking to their hunting spots and had just crossed a cattle guard. Verdun handed the rifle to his hunting partner, and that’s when it fired, killing him.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office said Verdun was struck in the head

Heard about it Sunday after church. Always sad when you hear about these accidents.

nothing makes me angrier than someone who travels (by foot/boat/atv/etc) to go hunt carrying a loaded gun. i did it once on the way to the blind and my dad told me he'd put me out on a sandbar if i ever did it again

Having it loaded is really dumb. Having it pointed toward your buddy's head is inexcusable

I knew Garret all of our life and he was truly a good man.

sorry for your loss and his family as well.
without being ghoulish, how did it happen? Did the buddy accidently pull the trigger while passing the rifle? trigger get caught in a coat cuff or something?

I have heard 2 different stories, so not sure what is true.
The linked article says they were crossing a cattle guard. A human can safely walk over a cattle guard so I don't believe that is true.
The story I heard on Saturday night when he was shot was they had to cross over a barbed wire fence and get into a pirogue. Garrett was in the pirogue and the other hunter handed him the gun and it went off. Like I said, either way the gun should have been unloaded.
That street has had some tragic shite happen back there. Back in 2001, 4 teenagers flipped over a truck into the bayou and they all drowned. Garret was really close to 2 of them.
