Besides this contract being 7 years and not 10, what else is better about it?

Hiring the winnigest coach in notre dame history away from them who had multiple trips to the national title game or playoffs is a big fricking name

People would have said that is impossible before being done. Taking an ole Miss coach isn’t really rare

7 years and 10 years is a big difference.

Not when it’s for 13 million a year versus 9.5.

If we fire Kiffin after 4 seasons like we did Kelly it will cost us 39 million in buyout bs 54 million

I guess it’s better but doesn’t seem like that big a deal really one way or the other

7 years and 10 years is a big difference.

Kiffin:
$91 million over 7 years ($13m/year)
Buyout at 80% remaining contract value
Total guaranteed: $72.8 million ($10.4m/year)
No duty to mitigate/offset provisions

Kelly:
$95 million over 10 years ($9.5m/year)
Buyout at 90% remaining contract value
Total guaranteed: $85.5 million ($8.6m/year)
Duty to mitigate, buyout offset by future earnings

Kelly’s initial contract guarantee was $13 million more than Kiffin’s, but over an extra 3 year duration. Kelly’s buyout is offset by future earnings while Kiffin’s is not.

We don’t know how the annual salary is structured under Kiffin’s contract. For example - Kelly’s contract was somewhat backloaded with his pay increasing each year. But we can run some numbers based on average salary for comparison.

Using average salaries, firing Kelly after year 4 would mean:
- $38.0 million spent to-date
- $51.3 million owed (offset by future earnings)
Total: between $38.0-89.3 million

By the same metric, firing Kiffin after year 4 would mean:
- $52.0 million spent to-date
- $31.2 million owed (with no offsets)
Total: $83.2 million

There’s not really any objective basis for arguing Kiffin’s contract is any better than Kelly’s. At least not with the information available today.

Kelly ultimately averaged $16 million a year, with his buyout. Four years times 16 million. Crazy.
