Can i transfer $8k of those shares of NBiS into a Roth. If so, and i sell them at $100 inside the roth, what is my basis (still $26?) and when am i taxed on that increase..

I’m guessing the answer is NO, but I’m going to see what the google says

Investopedia says cash only

Then they must have changed the rules. There’s the infamous story of Peter Thiel transferring all of his PayPal shares into his Roth…at a time when the contribution threshold was only $1800/yr.

No, cash contributions only. You'd have to sell the shares first.

You sure that’s how he did it? I’ve read he started it with about $2,000 cash and then used his accredited investor status to buy pre-ipo stock in early-stage companies like PayPal and Facebook. I have not read that he transferred stock directly into the Roth. That’s typically not allowed.

Yeah he was allowed to buy pre-IPO shares for something like a tenth of a cent a share with the full contribution. Crazy good scam for not being a “scam”.
