Trying to book a hotel that's refundable close to event date

I am browsing around for a hotel in NO near the dome for the Sugar bowl for just 1 night, checking in on Jan 1 and leaving Jan 2. I want it to be fully refundable until I know that our team would be playing but am having trouble finding that. All the sites I've seen that have refundable rates are only refundable without penalty up to 30 days prior to check in, which would be tomorrow. Which obviously doesn't help me. Last year I booked a hotel for the same game but we already knew after the SECCG that we had a bye and were locked into that game so I could just go ahead and fully book so it's a bit different than this year.
I guess I don't really book hotels all that frequently, but my ultimate question here is there a hotel brand, or website, that I can use that will allow me to book something that's refundable for a longer period of time?

Look on booking.com. I just did this for the high school championship games. Won’t know till Friday night and can cancel up to the 9th I believe without having to pay anything.

thanks! Is there a particular setting or something to fine tune the cancellation settings? At first glance I see a bunch of places that have free cancellation, but when I click on the hotel itself they still say "free cancellation prior to December 2nd".

You might try googling corporate discount codes and try a few to see if any of those rates are available, they usually have flexible cancelation policies.

Do you think the hotels are stupid? Just wait to book, or book a room in Mobile for the night that will let you cancel 24 hours out. Even as a Lifetime Titanium, I don't see any Marriott brand rates that permit a cancellation after December 1.

Third party booking sites, always a recipe for success.

Sign up for Hilton honors
They usually have a non refundable rate, one that’s like 2 weeks out , and one that’s like 3 days.

They can be - for airline tickets for sure. But the OP can certainly call the hotel in question to ask
