Lane wants to be fired

Let me back up for a second. I think Kiffin really wants to coach this Ole Miss season to its conclusion. However, I think his Plan B is twisting the situation to make Carter fire him if he absolutely will not allow that. He and Sexton hold the cards here. Carter will have to fire him to make him go away short of the end of the season.
I don’t think it’s about the buyout money for Lane here. I think he wants the cleaner out that being fired even though he tried to see the season through would give him. Personally, I think he would take a ridiculously lowered buyout if push comes to shove and he knows he won’t be allowed to coach another game there.
It’s just a theory, but it’s one of a few that explains the multiple delays in this whole thing and the consistent reporting that he wants the LSU job. It also lines up with the national sports media pressure now being applied to Carter to let him coach out the season.
Carter is beloved in Oxford, so I think he can fire Kiffin if he has to as long as it won’t require a big buyout sum. Now if I’m wrong and Sexton is using the full buyout as leverage to force Carter to let Kiffin play out the string, it would take a pissed off fat cat booster stepping up for Lane to be axed.

I’ve been supervising work for a holiday plant shutdown all but Thursday and I’m still on the road. I have nothing better to do tonight.

I get it. Theories piss you idiots off more than fake sauces.

If Lane gets fired by OM and then immediately goes to work for LSU for more money, he will have mitigated his damages and OM won’t owe him jack sh!t.
Your theory is patently wrong.

I don’t think it’s that clean. I won’t pretend to know every detail of his contract, but others in local and national media have talked about OM owing him some level of buyout if they terminate him to prevent him coaching in the playoffs.
ETA- you were actually wrong. His current contract has no offset or responsibility to mitigate. Taking any other job has no affect on his buyout.

It’s certainly interesting that he has no such clause in his contract, but I am speaking of a basic tenant of contract law which should apply no matter the language of his contract (unless it specifically waives mitigated damages relief).
They shouldn’t have to pay him a cent. He was clearly on his way out of the door and off to a job that was going to pay him more. I just don’t see a judge ordering any kind of buyout at that point. He has literally zero damages as a result of their conduct.

I’m just saying there is room for him and Sexton to use the buyout as leverage. No team or coach wants to go to court with the discovery process that has people combing through their dirty laundry. And every coach and program has some amount of that.
Considering that EVERY media report that’s come out tonight says Kiffin is leaving for LSU, but….something is obviously going on. It may not be what I suggest, but it is a theory that explains the delays.
I think the one floated from the Ole Miss side that Kiffin is blackmailing them, saying he will pillage the roster and tell coaches they have to leave with him now for LSU or he’s not taking them has merit. That would kneecap the shite out of their playoff hopes, but it would also make him a villain in the eyes of the national media forever. But it would also be effective leverage.

Theoretically, the “for cause” would be easy to prove just by subpoenaing the LSU insiders.

It's a part of the written record here that they don't know a goddam thing.

Ain't reading all that

Which is why I think there’s zero chance Ole Miss fires him unless they can do it with cause.
What they could do (theoretically) is find a way to suspend him with pay, which I suppose would put the blood on their hands so to speak.
But based on your theory that this is a principle thing for him, I don’t think that’s even really necessary. If LSU is willing to allow him to coach Ole Miss through the playoffs, Ole Miss would be the ones keeping him from finishing the season. I’m not sure stalling until they fire or suspend you provides any more moral high ground than telling them you’re leaving but are willing to finish what you started. In fact I’d argue it’s considerably worse.

If he wants to be fired, he just needs to study how Jimmy McGill did it.

I just don’t see it.

These are public universities. Coaches try to get cute on this, but it rarely seems to work. It’s all public record.
