Need some recommendations for a camera to use for still photos and possibly some video for outdoors. Trying to stay around the $2500 range.

My daughter is a sports photographer for a small college and loves her Canon R6. She has the mark ii which is on sale because the mark iii just released. $2000 vs $2800.

ETA: price is body only, you should also be able to get a lens for the mark ii under your budget.

R6 Mark II

These are very low shutter count, warranty included from MPB.

Lens choice should be made after researching the type/style of pics you're interested in.

For outdoor still photography and hybrid shooting in the ~$2,500 range, the Sony a7 IV (about $1,999 body-only) or Sony a7C II (about $2,299 body-only) are stronger choices than the Canon EOS R6. The Sony camera offer a 33 MP sensors vs the R6’s ~24 MP. This makes a big difference when shooting landscapes, wildlife, or travel, or if you need to crop or reframe. Outdoors shooting can often mean tricky light. The sony sensors deliver better dynamic range and recoverable detail in highlights and shadows. This gives you more editing flexibility than the R6 at basically the same price. Additionally, Sony’s system has a much broader and more affordable lens lineup, including excellent all-in-one outdoor lenses like a 24-105 mm f/4. Building a quiver of lenses around the R6 can get expensive fast.

In the preferred price range, you'll get more resolution, more creative flexibility, and a more practical, expandable kit with Sony. It would be the superior choice for what the OP is wanting to shoot.

Probably listen to this guy since he seems dialed in on the type of shooting you want to do. I was just aware of an option in your price range, daughter is the one who knows photography.

I will add this. Regardless of the camera you buy, be even more thoughtful of the lens ecosystem you are buying into because, for the most part, once you are committed, you're committed.

I mentioned Sony because they were the first major manufacturer to commit fully to mirrorless cameras, giving them years of head start in building the E-mount ecosystem. They offer the most mature and versatile mirrorless ecosystem. They have a wide range of lenses and there are extensive third-party options as well. This gives one flexibility for everything from travel and landscapes to portraits and video.

You can always go with a Canon mirrorless an use an adapter and Ef mount glass. No shortage of great lens choices at decent prices.

Yes, but it will never focus as fast and accurately as native mirrorless glass.

Canon is releasing some fairly odd new things in RF mount lenses... including a new 45mm f/1.2 for under $500.

Sony A7IV. Can be had for $2000 right now and will do everything you want and more. You can also get third party lenses from Tamron and Sigma that will make that part of the deal way more affordable.

Didn’t see your post before I wrote my recommendation. Ditto to all the things you noted!

I have an uncle who loves him some crazy travel photography in retirement. Spends a crap ton on all kinds of equipment, and constantly upgrading. I don't know where you live, but there’s an old school mom and pop type photography store in Dallas. He orders all of his stuff from them. He’s a Nikon guy, but apparently they sell all the major brands.

Don’t know the name of the place, but may be a place to check out.

Texted my uncle asking his thoughts on the Sony a7 IV, and he responded with “good camera, but something is being announced in the next few days, so hold off on buying until it does”. Told him I wasn’t looking to buy, but heard about it and wondering.

He wouldn’t give me details, so not sure how the camera tech world goes to know what is being announced.

Any idea?

Sony is close to releasing the A7 V. But it will retail close to, or above $3k.

A7V released today at $2,900.

It has some great new features but the A7IV at $2K is a better value for most unless you want the higher frames per second (30 vs 10) to shoot sports and wildlife. A7V also has Pre Capture which takes a picture up to a second before you took the actual picture. It’s pretty fascinating technology and helpful in some circumstances.

Looks to not be available (limited) until 12/18. So probably pretty hard to get for a month or so at this point.

That’s kind of irrelevant. My old lenses focus faster on an R3 than they could ever focus on a DSLR. The one difference that becomes noticeable is the mirrorless sensor outresolves the older glass.

Any recommendations for something in the $800-$1000 range? Looking more for youth sports photography/videography. Wife wants something new but not breaking the bank.

TIA

All of my options will be slight above your $1000k range new.

Sony a6400 + E 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6 OSS $1250
Canon EOS R50 + RF-S 18–150mm f/3.5–6.3 $1100
Nikon Z50 II + NIKKOR Z DX 18–140mm f/3.5–6.3 VR (kit) $1500

They are all on crop sensors and will give you a approximate focal length equivalent of 24-200mm full frame on a full frame camera.

My wife shot the first combo for the local MTB league this past fall with good results. But I would really look at the Canon.

One of her photos out of the sony.
