The M60 is an American second-generation main battle tank (MBT). It was officially standardized as the Tank, Combat, Full Tracked: 105-mm Gun, M60 in March 1959.[1] Although developed from the M48 Patton, the M60 tank series was never officially christened as a Patton tank. It has been called a "product-improved descendant" of the Patton tank's design.[12] The design similarities are evident comparing the original version of the M60 and the M48A2. The United States fully committed to the MBT doctrine in 1963, when the Marine Corps retired the last (M103) heavy tank battalion. The M60 tank series became the American primary main battle tank during the Cold War,[13] reaching a production total of 15,000 M60s.[14] Hull production ended in 1983, but 5,400 older models were converted to the M60A3 variant ending in 1990.

Nice build. That was the staple of my consciousness of a MBT in my formative years.

To be completely authentic to mid ‘80s West Germany, this graphic would need to appear somewhere on it-

Compared to most of your vehicles, this one has very little weathering. Why is that?

Great question. The reason is because the 68th Armor had just repainted their A3s to this pattern very recently in the mid-80s. Before then, they had a pattern like this…

Thy didn’t have Thor A3s painted in the pattern I used for long before they traded them in for M1 Abrams.

So, a recent conversion, thus a very time-specific snapshot, if you will. Nice

I'm curious, is it a different experience building something that you spent so much time in and around?

Yeah. Mostly that I can remember some of the small details. I don’t serve on th M60A3 though. My fist tank was the M1 Abrams. But there were still a few M60A3 battalions around early in my military career. We called those guys “Dino tankers”.

This had to be one from the heart. Did you start out on the M60A3?

I. I started on the M1, the M1(IP) specifically. There were still an few active A3 battalions around then though.

I actually kinda envied those dudes somewhat because there was so much room in their tanks compared to ours.

My mistake, I was thinking you spent some time on the M60. This is more like me and the 1/4 ton Jeep, they were still around and I saw them, but pretty sure I never rode in one. My military saga began right at the beginning of the HMMWV age.

My only experience with jeeps was right after I joined the army. We still had some old jeeps in motor pool and I got put on a detail that was to drive them to the depot to run back in. It was like driving a loud golf cart. And they were only barely faster than one.

I was at Fort Polk in 1985 (11B) when all of our platforms were M60A3 and M113A2. Cannot remember the first time I was an M1 in the “flesh.”
