The Family Man is a solid rewatch during the holidays.

This Nic Cage flick came out when I was 18 and really just starting life as an adult. I watched it in the movies, got the popcorn, a drink, and enjoyed the flick. Thought it was fine then, but sort of generic, which it is.
Rewatched it this week and holy smokes does it hit different at this middle age stage of life. The wife, career, the kids, the bills, the friends, the grind of showing up everyday for your family, the subtle flirts from the family friend, resilience on that temptation, doing right by your fellow man… this movie encapsulates a lot of what we all experience day to day.
Where the movie absolutely worked was the chemistry between Cage and Tea Leoni (almost forgot how adorable she was)… the casting of those two was perfect and they played their parts to a T. She matched Cage’s zany and wacky yet strong and confident approach and their scenes were really well done.
In the hands of a lesser cast this movie could have been boring. But every character was perfect and a strong supporting cast helped deliver a win.
Sometimes we don’t get to buy the expensive suit, but then we realize we never needed it anyway.

I didn't see this movie until 10 years after i came out but it has been a Holiday season must watch. And you are right. It definitely hammers home as an adult.

I agree with everyone. I didn't discover this movie until well after it came out. I look forward to catching it every year as it is played quite a bit around the holidays. The actor playing the guy in charge of Lassiter's company who Cage replaces does a great job portraying himself as a little bitch.

Yep it’s the inverse of his world , featuring assertion and confidence with a hint of paranoia highly successful people carry with them that someone is coming for their cheese. However, what that scene showed was that Alan (iirc) had his kids toys set up in the same office Jack was previously isolated in. This scene showed Jack that a man could achieve balance with prestige and the role of family man.

I have a brand new baby girl 7 weeks old, my friend. Plus one that is just turned 13. The kid scenes powerbombed my emotional fragility haha.

it's release date 12/22/2000 so it's definitely a christmas movie, i was 39 when i saw it with my wife, the week between christmas and new years, my son was 6 having just completed first semester of first grade and my daughter was 1. my parents baby sat. we saw on a sunday after noon and then back to my parents for sunday dinner and pick up the kids.
my son's about to be 31 and expecting his first child, daughter will be 26 in june.
enjoy these years they go by so fast, i didn't consider myself middle age at 39 but i guess i was.

It’s in the conversation. He seemed very genuine. Maybe the role hit home for him.
I will also share a funny Cage story: a couple years after this movie came out, around 2004, some LSU KD’s I was good friends with (dated one of them) were standing outside a bar in the French Quarter to get in, when a limo pulls up. A dude hops out and says he’s Cage’s assistant and asked if the girls wanted to party with him. They said sure and hopped in. Sure as it was told, Cage was in the limo and they spent the rest of the evening bar hopping and he paid for everything. They had a blast and said he was super cool to chill with. He ended up having his assistant chase the girl I was seeing, calling her often to try to fly her out to various locations he was filming movies. This girl had an Asian persuasion, as her dad was Japanese and her mom was white. She finally had to tell the assistant she was flattered but she was in a relationship. Not long after, Cage married an Asian waitress (iirc) he had met out somewhere on location.
