The first major battle between U.S. and NVA forces in the Vietnam War, made famous by the 2002 motion picture, We Were Soldiers.

Fought from November 14-18, 1965, the battle was a tactical U.S. victory that came at a cost of 237 men killed and 262 men wounded or missing. NVA losses range between 554 killed (NVA claim) and 1,745 killed (U.S. claim).

The book written by Joe Galaway with Hal Moore is even better than the movie. I couldn't put it down. Big salute to the 7th Cav!!

"We discovered in that depressing, hellish place, where death was our constant companion, that we loved each other. We killed for each other, we died for each other, and we wept for each other. And in time we came to love each other as brothers." ~ Hal Moore

“ Wounded or missing “. Seems like it should be ” killed or missing “ and “ wounded”. Unless the missing were eventually found.

My Pop was Air Cav in Nam 68-69’……..”Ruthless Riders”

His unit went into the IDV several times during his tour.
Said of all the places they went, that one gave him the creeps more than all the others combined.

Agreed!! I know the movie focuses on 1st Battalion/LZ X-Ray, but the book describes the horrifying action at LZ Albany too which is tough to read about.

Sgt Plumley famously only carried a sidearm. When asked why he didn’t carry a M16 he said “by the time I will need one, there will be plenty laying around.”

My dad was a senior NCO in 7th Cav at the time, and was left behind at Benning with a significant number of other senior NCO’s to train replacements, but Big Army realized the mistake fairly quickly and he joined them in country not long after. He always seemed irritated by the fact they were initially left out.

When I was living in Vietnam about 15 years ago, I rode a motorcycle through that area for a few weeks…..Pleiku, Kontum, An Khe, Dak To, Razorback Ridge. Some beautiful country up there.

The place where the ‘We Were Soldiers’ area occurred is just a muddy field today. Not much to commemorate the spot.

The Montagnard people up there are great people. Enjoyed some moonshine with those folks.

Chickenhawk by Robert Mason is also a cool book. He was a Huey pilot for the first Cav. I think it is considered the formative helicopter pilot book on Nam.
