The conclusion:
quote:

Undergrad CS programs at universities and colleges in the U.S. produce more skilled students on average than equivalent programs in China, India and Russia.

quote:

As part of the study, the researchers selected nationally representative samples of seniors from undergraduate computer science programs in the U.S., China, India and Russia. Students were given a two-hour standardized computer science test developed by the nonprofit testing and assessment organization Educational Testing Service. In total, 678 students in China, 364 students in India and 551 students in Russia were tested. In the United States, the researchers used assessment data on 6,847 seniors.

And the absolute nail in the coffin on this topic:
quote:

“There is this sense in the public that the high quality of STEM programs in the United States is driven by its international students,” Loyalka said. “Our data show that’s not the case. The results hold if we only consider domestic students in the U.S.”

There's a reason those students want to come here for college.

37% of men in this country have a bachelors degree in anything.

This is probably a better argument for why you bring them here to train them in our schools and let them work here since we aren’t doing it.

Trump suspended h1b for a year and has now implemented a $100k fee.

You haven’t done a damn thing about it.

We don't need them here for training. How can they train people that are more proficient than they are?

Probably a good move.

It would seem the only reason to take even the top 1% would be to play a cruel game of keep away from competing nations

I am sure Stanford is too holy to slant a study to be self-serving.

Same

They always give the 100 yard stare when something goes off script and they have to use problem solving and critical thinking skills

Then just try to pass the buck and act like its not their problem and hope someone else will tackle it

Schools in India are not better than schools in the US.

They're not more skilled or knowledgable than Americans. They're cheaper. That's it.

Trump has not suspended H1B for a year. The $100K fee proposal has a lot of loopholes.

Since 50% of all H1B's in the last 5 years have come from India they should freeze India for 5 years.

I've met a few smart "Indian" people in college and in my professional life

The qualifier being that they were born here. Their parents were immigrants but they weren't.

We have almost 200 R1 universities.

Thats a mind blowing amount.

Higher education is in English.

The top 11 universities in the world are US or UK.

The top 25 add 2 Chinese, one Canadian (ex British colony) and a Singapore university(ex British colony).
The top 32 adds 2 Australian and another Singapore again ex British colonial.

I know a number of European researchers, they are great, but they struggle to get funding and grants.

China is a whole different discussion though...

If you consider US born students at schools like LSU the graduates in engineering are very good. I hired scores of them from LSU, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Texas, Houston, Texas Tech, Penn State, West Virginia, USL, Louisiana Tech, Colorado School of Mines, Utah State, Wyoming, and more. All produced excellent results for us, some better than others.

The problem we had was that there were not enough of them. We had to fight off our competitors, then also, The Magnificent Seven, the oil companies, and more. When we tried to get students from the HBCUs they were beyond just bad.

We had to hire foreigners and support their green card applications, which was a giant pain in the arse. But we did it. It was either that or turn away work. The foreigners we hired were similar to the US experience. We had a lot of success until we started to ramp up hiring. Then we started getting people who literally didn’t know how to use the toilet. That’s when we backed off.

My advice is that we should continue to support immigration but we should be selective. Import those with skills we need AND who are assimilable. And NO MUSLIMS!

Go read the thread about UC San Diego that is on the front page here. Bunch of morons.
