ND's schedule and he was a better coach then. His teams played smart and had good fundamentals. He was checked out by the time he got here.

So, if he was checked out, and I’m not suggesting he wasn’t, how come Woodward didn’t see that.? I’m not trying to bash Woodward again, but seriously, Woodward is supposed to be able to evaluate.

He was engaged and had something to prove.He also had real student athaletes.To get int ND you had to know how to spell your name.

Maybe, but identifying good assistants is part of being a good head coach. He slipped hard in this area.
Remember, he also won at Central Michigan and built Cincinnati into a big winner. He had an undefeated regular season at Cincy before leaving and had two undefeated regular seasons at ND. Even with the lighter schedule, going undefeated is hard to do. He was at one time a solid coach. His decision-making skills went to crap and he just wasn't as good as he once was. And the SEC will expose any weakness you have.

I don't think he was checked out when he first got here.
I really think he wanted to win a NC but the way you do it at ND isn't the way you do it at LSU.
That is where he fricked up

At ND he was an average coach even though he is in the perfect situation for his style and personality. He averaged over 4 losses a year his first seven years and went 4-8 his seventh year. He did have the natty appearance, but he doesn't survive that stretch at an elite SEC school. In his defense, he did win 10+ games a year his last five years, which is damn impressive, even at Notre Dame.
His best years were at Cincinnati. It was his offense and he was heavily involved in preparation and play calling and extremely vocal with his players.
At LSU he basically slipped back into his mid-career first seven year stretch at Notre Dame. Below average overall with an occasional solid season to survive. At 64, he looks done
