JetBlue passengers were taken to a hospital after a sudden altitude drop on a flight from Mexico forced an emergency landing in Florida on Thursday, according to officials.

The article doesn’t mention anything about turbulence. What would cause this if it’s not turbulence?

I flew last week and as I was approaching MSY over the Bonne Carré near the interstate, my plane dropped the most I’ve ever experienced and it legit scared the hell out of me and everyone else on the plane. There were loud screams from some. I don’t know how many feet we dropped in that split second, but it was a lot, and I gotta say that if a plane crashes that way, there isn’t jack shite passengers can do to even know what’s happening before it happens. It felt like we were in free fall for a second and I was convinced for a moment that that was it. I cannot imagine how scary a drop significant enough to injure people would be!

That tickle in your stomach is wild when that happens though.

Worst drop like that I've had was also landing at MSY right before a thunderstorm. Charlotte to Nola and we were landing to the west on runway 29 where you come in over the city (not a usual landing pattern, it's usually to the south on runway 20 or to the east like you on runway 11). The cross winds dropped the plane and even as a normal traveler I was clutching the armrests.

Hopefully all of those on the jetblue are safe after their experience today

Pilots are under inordinate pressure to fly straight routes and save fuel even at the cost of flying through bad winds.

This probably happens way more than reported.

It amazes me the people that don’t keep their seat belt fastened . Those are the one’s getting injured

Looks like it dropped 100 feet over maybe a minute. Then diverted to tampa 10 min later

Is 100 feet over a minute a lot?

A drop in altitude is part of what turbulence is. Could also be an abrupt increase. Or both in rapid succession. Wear your seatbelt and you got no worries

Hell no, all my life I’ve been hearing people use that term “dropped” erroneously, they have no clue and 100’ wouldn’t be discernible anyway

Had it bad years ago coming in over Lake Pontchartrain. Plane dropped and rough turbulence. Even the flight attendant was alarmed. Someone said it’s bc we are flying in over the water.

It was probably the dumbasses who didnt put their seatbelts on after the captain turned on the seatbelt light 30 seconds before weather got real bad.
